good morning guys and gals, my name is rob and i am currently stationed in norfolk va. i just got a 65 special 4 door (for $600) it runs not beautifully but it does, she needs a lot of interior work but frame is solid. i also just got a 340 to drop in it and a th350 transmission. The problem en lies in the fact that I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING!!! lol i am new to restoring and really any kind of engine work. if anyone has any advice or suggestions please let me know. i dont want a drag car just something that has a little bit of ass to it. also my budget is not very hick (around $2500 ) so anything is much appreciated

Welcome! Thank You for your service, Sir.
If you just want to add a "little bit of ass to it", feed it wedding cake. Seriously, what engine/trans combo is in it now? That will give everyone an idea of what parts you will need to do the swap. And, if you have any pics, post 'em up. I'm sure there are a few guys/gals on here that have all the parts and knowledge you'll ever need to get your Skylark to where you want it.

Greetings .. and I also thank you for your service.

Are you on a Base ? I've heard some of them have facilities for servicemen to work on their vehicles - It may be a good place to start and make friends who can mentor you on your basic mechanicals if you really have "No Idea". We can help with the Buick specific stuff.

I don't know much about the 300's or even 340's but I do know that the 350's are plentiful and cheeeeeep and that hop-up parts are readily available. This may be a good direction to go even though you have a 340 .. sometimes they and the 300s cant be given away.

    Much luck ..

Welcome aboard! I've owned a lot of 64 to 67 Specials and Skylarks and never saw one with a 2 piece driveshaft. I was in the Air Force in the 70's stationed in SC and made a lot of trips home to PA. Had a 340 in a 64 Special that got 17 MPG. When the gas crisis hit I took out the 340 and put a 225 V6 in it and my mileage went to 25 MPG (with a 4 speed and a 2.78 rear). I was making $2.50/hr then, not making the bucks you guys are now.

The 340 will drop right in with the same motor mounts, exhaust and everything. The 350 trans is the same length, mount and drive shaft yoke as the ST300. You will need to make your throttle longer and you will need a bigger radiator w/different shroud. Personally, I prefer the ST300 over the 350 trans. I'm sure your automotive hobby shop has all the stuff you need to get it done.
