430 and 455 gaskets are interchangeable my doubting fritzendoubter. The hole is really no problem other than wanting to weep oil into the distributor valley. Everyone thinks its an O-ring leak. I laugh at the leakers.

Now that I have 20,000 views John, I suggest you go back and re-read ALL my posts. Quiz tomorrow at 1000hrs. Cliffs Notes on the hole begins around page 12 or so. Now where'd I leave that bowl??? ws

don't worry about the extra hole,it makes the gaskets interchangable. Plug the hole you circled on the driver side as I described.

So I am cleaning up a set of these same iron heads and (borrowing Fritz's picture) I came across these passages that go back to the just behind the exhaust valve for every cylinder, the center two were packed full of carbon on both heads. I noticed they do not exist on one of the other castings pictured in another thread. Does anyone know what the purpose of these are?

Don’task me,I know just enough to get into trouble lol.
I do know by the mercy of helpful members that those two recessed hole pictured in each head are blocked by many racers to reduce heat I believe (correct me if wrong, I am very humble for good reason lol) I think those are the “heat crossover holes”.
I was further told from that same picture that the two small holes above the threaded head bolts hole and to the left and right of the “heat crossover holes should be sealed (drill, tap plug etc).
Hope I explained that correctly so you might wanna wait for confirmation.

In other news even though my right knee from the car wreck keeps trying to give out on me (kid hit us at 40mph while we were at a dead stop) and other associated “elective scans & surgery”( due to corona virus) I sorta feel human again today & it is not raining, still can see my knuckles well from running the wire wheel that snagged the latex glove but not my dominant hand so if wife doesn’t grab me by the collar I might try and do “a little” light work today. Really want that motor buttoned up at a minimum but have to be very careful and take lots of breaks (not really in my DNA but will try lol).
Will see how day goes : )

Hey der herr Fritzengassenpasser! Those two holes are actually FOUR on each head which connect the AIR passage on the intake manifold through the heads, into the exhaust port. That passage is pressurized, and passes cold air into the exhaust stream to "crack" hydrocarbons. Some OEM stuff had the external pipes and was tried to be "timed" for cold air injection. Those heads also share the center heat cross over to supply the passenger side head with the same AIR air. Removing the pump and blocking off the inlet caused a no pressure effect on the holes and they plugged with carbon.

The EGR on the intake was in need of re-circing exhaust gas through the intake and heads for a faster warm up by effectively closing off the single exhaust system pipe on the drivers head and pushing the extra gasses through the system until that cheezy flapper valve at the manifold discharge opened to allow full flow. Dual exhaust uses that system to literally push more gases through the crossover. . Hence the giant cross-over. Hmm. After all is said and done those heads are not the worst, but do have larger chambers to reduce compression for smog stuff. Youd think that higher compression would burn cleaner, but the braniacs figgered out that lower comp. with crappier fuels, and now gasahol would lower the NOX and other gasses to an accepted standard for the FEDOT to accept. Remember, in all started in chin, ah,er, CaliPornia. So meanwhile that ol' semi with a 8-71 billowing black smoke outa the pipes at 325 horsepower was OK.

Im building a wood burner for wood gasification to put in the trunk of the BADLASS. Stoke 'em up! ws

Yeah John... near the end when gasoline and diesel fuel (refined stuff) aint available any more, the old 6-71 in the dump truck will still run on french fry oil. God knows theres enough Crack Arnolds around. A truck that smells like French Fries... FOLLOW ME! Dont forget the air starter with a compressor driven off a stationary bike. I guess a Sunday ride in the Buick will be even more special then... Yackety Yak... Dont talk back! ws

Okay, I want to get these 1972 cylinder heads plugged up in the correct heat crossover holes as well as plug the correct single oil passage on the front drivers side please.
I bought 3/8” plugs for the 4 small holes (2 per head circled in yellow) and modified the 2 per head larger heat crossovers (also circled in yellow for a total of 4 with 3/4” plugs after enlarging those recessed holes).
There is a picture Bill provided & Gary also recommended plugging as SOP of the drivers side leaky oil passage that needs to be plugged in an earlier post.
Is all of this correct and I can use the stock FELBRO 72 intake pan along with my older style B4B ?
Sorry for all the questions but only wanna do this once before my physical body totally falls apart lol
Thank all of you for your invaluable help!

Fritzee... theres FOUR of those holes per head. I dont think a B4B is gonna work with the later heads. Please correct me if I'm wrong... ws

Wow,we need to clean this up & make it a sticky.
Thank you Captain Billingspluggin so let me quote you in my own words to make sure I have finally got this.
    1. The two approx. 3/4” recessed into the heads heat cross over holes in both heads should be blocked.
    2. Referring to the picture above all 4 approx. 3/8” holes circled in the picture on each head should be plugged.

3/4” recessed heat cross over hole.

At this point with all my trial and mostly errors I am more than happy to forget about my B4B till I can have Gary build my 70 Stage 1 engine. So I will just hoist that factory 72 smog intake back on there after I am sure the head plugging is done correctly.
Please respond if via y’all’s help I at least have the areas to be plugged correct & thank you again!
Edit: Oops, AND the leaky drivers side block oil passage hole should be blocked.

996A653B-2141-460F-AFA5-36402FE118B5.jpeg Okay back to Napa(parts missing in “sealed bags”) did manage to get started though.

Question: Should I JB weld or similar those 3/4” plugs in? Would hate for one of those to get loose and jam up the works somewhere.
P.S. I am aware the 3/8” plugs are not fully seated yet. ; )

    Thanks

Okay,I still feel like death warmed over & like zero energy but since last posts, I rotated the crank a bunch of times while fogging it with lube and gave all the cylinder walls a light cleaning & blew them out.
Now BOTH (Yes!!!) rebuilt Cylinder heads are painted, mounted & torqued down & same goes for the matching intake. Missing one manifold bolt that refuses to be found but found a longer bolt I used spacers with so everything would seal & cure till I find the MIA intake bolt.
Today I decided to try and tackle the super scavenger o the passenger side.
Wasn’t sitting right so checked cross member for interference & other potential hang up while I supported the collector with my foot and bounced the header around while holding the top end & lightly applying wrecking bar in various spots.
Finally I heard a light shift and click & the header suddenly was all lined up and ALL the screws snugged up by finger (or fingers for that lower middle “fun” bolt lol).
Put my Remflex recommended graphite header gasket in so that side is all done!
Hornets & I coexisted as the flew inches past my hand to go in through the firewall but will be evicted when I finish the other side & am ready to see if this turkey run any good.
Still have to do removed A-arms & used disc brake conversion but seeing less and less of that banana yellow engine paint makes me feel better every day.
Still swinging down here in North Carolina:)

Ahhhhh more quality previous owner work.
Sitting here very slowly examining things (especially since I have ZERO experience with an HEI distributor (where is #1?).
Looking at water pump deciding on color when I swear the 2 yellow bolts appear to be valve cover spark plug loom bolts with studs cut off and then spot the bare wires going into that huge distributor.
Really would rather just have a nice standard 455 points distributor with a ProTronics kit that’s in my wheelhouse.
Getting dizzy just sitting here in heat looking at all this plus the mountain of personal stuff going on from the car wreck, taxes owed, daughter’s brand new lease commitment dance studio supposed to open in May and wife’s Dad in last days of his life but no one can even visit him or his wife in locked down retirement community.
Well, I do have some control on this motor & none on other stuff so think I just answered my own dilemma.
Eliminate substandard work, keep painting and wrenching

Took a break from the motor but still been dinking around.
Definitely not finished cleaning up details (red paint “over spray” or “over brush” in this case lol) and have to wrap up all those wires & many other things.
Been striping the back edge of my spoiler where GSX sticker is as the previous owner never finished any of that.
Just do part of it and then “age” it to match the rest of the car (kinda like blending paint on a nice car).
“Oldshool85” (Richard) was kind enough to send me a huge pile of new stickers (Thanks again buddy : ) so here are a couple of pictures of a couple that spoke to me to work on them so tell me if they look legit please : )
    Hope everyone is doing well.
