Identify the block and tranny game...

Well I'm new here and I brought with me lots of questions.

My newly acquired REgal is an 81 - no engine or drive train. Its originally an AZ car. Body is VG and frame/suspension looks good as far as I can see and I say that because the previous owner sprayed on at least 1/4" of bed liner/undercoat to protect it from the rust belt winters up here. I also recieved a basket case engine and a "ready to run" transmission.

First question is how to identify the block, heads and rotating assembly. I want to rebuild this thing as cheap squeeky tight axxx as I can. I was told the block and engine are 350 Buick so I am staying Beewick like a good boy. Any tips or numbers to look for? I may be able to find some pictures somewhere on my cluttered PC to help.

    Thanks in advance.

Didn't find any pics - I will take some when I go out to the farm - Its inside a shed so maybe in the next week ..... and snow is melting!

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place for info? Any thoughts? Threads? Search recommendations?
    Thanks.

Great to be here guys and gals(just in case)!!!! Thanks.

GREAT threads - got to print some of this stuff out for sure.

The block is not in the the car. The tranny and block, heads, pistons and rods were all over the floor of the garage that my REgal sat in unattended for a least a year, so I may not be able to tell the location of the distributor front or rear. I tried to scoop up as many parts as I could at the time. Now when I go out to the farm I can look for numbers - turn the block over - its pretty clean so I should be able to find them.

    Good Luck with your project.:TU:

    By-the-by; if I'm NOT mistaken ... a "stock" 10-compression Buick 350 V8 made somewhere around 440 lbs/ft TORQUE??? :Smarty::TU:

I checked on numbers.... If I am reading correctly?

Bottom of block says '350' and '7'.

Top of block reads 'M**' and some other hard to read hyrogliphics followed by '1241748'.

One of the heads has 'L * 4' on one end and GM 1243452 on the other.

Pics are attached - I have a pic of th intake and 2V carb set up too if that would help someone. I found the block number listed for 455. Is tht correct?

I'm confused. Anybody want to educomate me?

    1241748- comes back as a 72-81 Buick 350 block

1243452- also comes back as a Buick 350 head

Somebody else will have to educomate ya on the clock and other things.

    I can see why...
The 455's will have a "455" cast into the block.
If i remember correctly, the "350" is cast into the back of the intake.

Its not my intention to question your results - but please point out where you found the above info...

I noted in a previous post my block says '350' with what I think is a '7' cast near the '350'. That only screwed up my addled brain more. Sonner or alter this will make sense.

    Thanks.

    Assuming the 72-80 Buick 350 block -

Its probably then a smog control block? (& heads)

I won't be doing anything with this till some time this summer ... but I am trying to learn as much about it as I can. I have never built an engine by myself, so this will be a first. Now the old adage about 'teaching an old dog new tricks' comes to mind here.:Do No: It is something to do.

I will probably be looking for parts listing for the engine as well as trying to locate parts and find out just what is missing from the pile (& boxes) I received.
Thanks for the input and kind words everyone!:beer
