Can the inner fenders on a '70 GS be removed or at least moved out of the way for body bushing replacement with the engine in place and without taking the outer fenders off? The two bushing under the floorpan are at issue.

I'll be removing the bumper, grille, radiator core support, etc. to patch the core support for the front bushings.

    Thanks.

Yes it is possible i've done it before as long as the bolts dont strip out or something like that.Take all the bolts out and pull it out. Spray everything down with wd40 first.

    Gary,

I do this all the time for installation of the MSD box behind the LH inner fender.

Trick is to remove the mount that goes to the firewall, before you try and get the inner fender free from the outer fender. The way it is set up, it pinches the inner fender in between the mount on the firewall, and the outer fender, and you will have a hard time getting it to come loose and clear that outer fender, if you leave that mount in place. The mount can be removed, after you take the two inner fender to firewall mounting bolts out, by accessing it from just above the frame, on either side. There is one 5/16 diameter (1/2 head) bolt that holds the mount onto the firewall.

After you have removed this mount, then pull the inner fender free from the outer, and remove it from the car, by sweeping the rear of the inner fender down and out. It helps to have the car as high in the air as you can get it.

I do this often on fully assembled cars, so with the dissasembly your talking about, you should have no problems.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thanks for the specifics Jim!

Put new body bushings on the Riviera and had so much fun I thought I should do the GS. Can-o-worms but will be well worth it I'm sure.

Ok, since you basically have the front clip apart, why not just remove the hood and then the fenders w/fenderwells attached?

I think you are describing the cowl mounting bushings/body mounts, not the floor pan bushings??????? Those are under the doors.

While the fenders w/fenderwells are out, replace the A-frame splash shields too. Good time to check for lower fender rust and inner lower structure rust.

Since you have nothing else to do (a retiree) why not take off the entire front clip, paint the firewall, replace the heater core, detail the ac box if it is still there, clean the cowl and paint, paint the fenderwells, etc?

I know you Gary......you need more projects now since deer season is over! :TU:

Yeah, now that sounds like fun! Might as well pull the engine and clean it up, too - annually. Put in 16 hours and 600 miles AT WORK yesterday George; retired?.. my uncovered posterior. But thanks for the advice; I just might do it that way. Never thought they were 'floor-pan' bushings, just that's the location.. sheesh.l

    Thanks

I never tried to remove the left inner fender but I did try to do the right inner fender to replace my heater core. I found that I had to take the outer fender off to get the inner fender out. The shop manual says the same thing. My car has AC which may make a difference. :Do No:
