Installed a pull through electric fuel pump for priming only

  1. My Wildcat always was hard to start after siting so I took the plunge and put a pump on just for priming. I wanted to put this on the forum because the types of fuel pumps that a mechanic pump can pull through are not well documented. I used an Airtex E8251 and it works very well. The Airtex E8016S seems to have the same specifications as the E2851, and is listed for motor vehicles, however some say the design will not pass fuel when not engaged, like having a mechanical pump pull through it. The manufacturer's literature shows a gear like impeller to pump the fuel on the 16S, instead of the solenoid style of the one I am using. Airtex says the warranty is void if a fuel filter is not in place, so I am using a Wix 33046 before it goes to the pump. The neatest thing I belive I have done is wired it up to an accessory switch, so it is right on the dash and doesn't look out of place.

I used a Holley Red pump teed into the rubber fuel line near the tank for many years. Used a relay and switch to turn it on and off. I found for normal driving, I could leave it off and the Stage1 mechanical pump would draw through the Holley. For ANY kind of aggressive driving though, the Holley pump provided enough of a restriction to cause the car to start to nose over. I remember one year while on my way out to the GS Nats, I was following Marco, and we were up around 75-80 MPH on the interstate. I had the pump switched off and the car started to buck. Turning the Holley on remedied that almost instantly. My car was running mid to low 12's with this set up.

When I installed the new engine, I upgraded to the 1/2" Robb Mc pickup and -8AN push lok hose up to the CV products mechanical pump. That set up has never let me down anywhere, and the car runs consistent mid 11's.
