I have a question on installing quarter panel skins on my 1972 skylark. how are these usually installed? are they cut in? are they installed over existing metal?
I am contemplating getting these for my car and just wanted a little more info.

    thanks

I can't imagine anyone putting them over the existing panels but I'm sure it's been done. The old should be cut off and the new ones welded in place either by flanging the panel or butt welding them on.

My car has them welded over the original panels. That's the way it was when I got the car. I should remove them, and install them the right way. But, I'm not sure if I'll have either the time or the money to do that right now.

It chaps my 'nads that a body man put a GM left quarter on my car around '74(ish) and cut it like a quarter skin. . And it's brazed on to boot  . But after removing all the old bondo, the brass work was pretty good (with a little heat warping) and he removed all the flux before bondoing. The humidity level here allowed for some moisture under the bondo during the original body work so I had some surface rust to remove. I left well enough alone instead of changing the quarter again and just reworked the bondo with modern stuff. He did leave about 3/4" overlap between the old panel and the new panel so I didn't feel so bad.

thanks again. i tought that it was proper to cut the old quarter out but i saw a posting that seemed to have them welded over the existing panel (for a portion).

the Tabco panels look good. i think that is the way that I am going to go.

That's the lazy 70's bodyman way to do it.The right way is to cut the old panel off. There are a hundred ways to do bodywork wrong and leaving the old panel on is one of them.
