I will be near the car tomorrow so I will make a note of the intake #s.

Zone 24 should be CA, not sure what dealer 340 is, if you make a post in the "The Paper Trail" someone might have a listing for dealer 24-340.

Kevin,
Zone #24 (Los Angeles), Dealer #340 is Steffy Buick Company of Anahein California, and just in case you wanted to know, they sold 569 1972 Buicks.

...and then there were two.........

Duane, thanks for the info about Steffy Buick. Some of the paperwork I did receive with the car is from it's resale from Steffy Buick in Aug. 1980. It must have been traded in and resold for the whopping sum of $2,390.00. So now that I've had it documented and it's a Cali car , I need to find out if the number you've given me (1238397 ) is correct , or 1239925-1 , which another member gave me is right. I'm still waiting to see what Gary finds on his. So as of right now , I still don't know. :Do No:

EGR intake # 1238323

I finally got a chance to check out our car. It has an intake with an EGR valve (car was built in Fermont and sold in southern CA) with the casting # B-1238323-1 with a date that appears to be A-21 (hard to see with the carb in place). The car also has the original California only Stage 1 carb 7042942 MF dated 2651 (thank goodness). The EGR valve appears to be original and has a orange decal on it that says "NK 7630643"

I believe it to be the original intake (everything else appears original, carb, alternator, heads, block, etc) and we bought the car from the original family in 1989 and were told that only the water pump had been replaced. I have somehow misplaced both copies of my 1972 assembly manuals so I don't know what it says it is supposed to have on it.

more confusion

Thanks Gary for your input. I bought a 1239925-1 from a 72 Stage 1 and it doesn't have an EGR. A member on this thread above gave me this casting number and he said his DOES have an EGR . So now what ? Same part # but one has it one doesn't and they are both different than this one. Anyone feel free to chime in. :Dou:

My2cents...

Your car appears to have been built in Flint, I would look to use what other cars built in Flint with similar build dates and California emissions used.

Be careful to only use the parts books, assembly manuals, and other factory notation...as a guide, the numbers can and do change during production.

When you can find an original, your best source is the cars themselves.
Good luck!

same # different manifold.

It seems that the manifold I bought 1239925-1 ( non egr ) is the same as the one on another members car , also a 1239925-1 . His has an EGR valve , mine doesn't . What gives? These numbers don't match the one Duane offered or the one on Gary's Stage 1 ? Can anyone shed some light on this. Any more 72 455 GS's with original manifolds and an EGR , please tell us your casting number. Thanks again , Kevin .

Oops, I lied to you...

Kevin,

I made a mistake when I told you my original intake had an EGR. It doesn't. When I saw Gary's picture showing the EGR valve located back by the PCV valve, I knew something was different since I thought mine was located on the drivers side of the intake. As it turns out, the mounting holes I originally thought were for the EGR valve are for the A.I.R. system/pump. You can see this on page 67-9 of the 1972 Chassis Service Manual.

Sorry for the wrong information. I've had this intake laying around since I bought this car back in 1981 from my brother, and I always just assumed those holes were for the EGR. :Dou: Here is a picture I took showing the A.I.R. mounting holes. I hope this helps you finally get the right intake for your car. Once again, I'm sorry to have caused the confusion.

I searched and found the pictures from my original 72 GS 455 auto calf car. It was built in Fremont and sold in Calf. It is not a stage 1 car but the intake that is on it is a B-1238323-1. The intake is an EGR AIR intake Could it have anything with where it was built?

I know this is an old post but I thought I would bring it back to life to see if any other info came to light about this?

I remember reading somewhere that California 455 cars did have EGR in 72. Do you have the correct carb for this car? Off the top of my head I thought they were different p/n for EGR cars, maybe ending in #930?

I found a 1238323-1 and installed that with the correct 7042940 Quadrajet for Cali emission 455 auto Non Stage 1.

All 72 455's had AIR.
72's with California emissions or manual trans had EGR valves.
Check your chassis repair manual to confirm.

Well according to the books the below are the only two listed but we know that cannot be so. I had one original car that had the B-1238323-1 intake and also Gary has one with the same intake. Both cars are Fremont built and calf designated cars.
Could flint built cars have a different intake number???

I got this info from the Factory 72 Buick Engine book,
72 455 intake # 1239924 (A.I.R. less EGR)
72 455 intake # 1238397 (A.I.R. with EGR)

Remember casting numbers and part numbers are not always the same.

What would the casting numbers be for those part numbers?

Thanks

thepartsman Back Ordered Again ?

This is the info I've had for years.....and will be in the '72 Field Manual

1972:

Cast # 1239925 = Part #1239924 (455-4bbl with A.I.R., without E.G.R. Valve )

Cast # 1238323 = Part # 1238397 ( 455-4bbl with A.I.R. and EGR Valve )

The 1238397 design was retained for 1973 and early 1974 but had a change mid year '74, part # 1245375 of which
changed to a 1245059 for the last of the 455s and discont. 1/82.

Note: I'm in need of a pic of the complete 1238323 manifold without the carb..etc....mine is blurred.

I looked at a 73 intake I have yesterday, and it's a 1243020-2 casting number. I was under the impression that they were the same as the 72 EGR intake, but apparently the number change took effect for 73. This one has a D5 date, and 73 on the bottom side.
