    True story,
Small Ohio town where I lived in the late 60's to early 70's bought a 69 or 70 Delta 88 from the local dealer in town. Had all the usual cop stuff and a 455, turbo 400 driveline. Except it was a 2bbl!!:Dou:
I had a 390 Mustang GT, originally a 390. Didn't take me long to Hammer the 390 into pieces. So we built another "390" for it. Was a side oiler block, with a 428 PI crank for 454 ". Low rise heads and an Offenhauser 360 intake (terrible manifold). One of the cops and I were about the same age, got into a discussion one night about the Mustang being slower than the Cruiser. He knew nothing about cars, but the 455 part was considered magic. Went out side of town and ran a standing mile for $100. Wasn't even close.:error: :bla: He never paid me, but he'd stop my wife anytime he saw her in town and try to write her up for something.

The car existed and there are photos "back in the day" of the car. That one article that John Brown posted is the article I was referring too chronicling the car. It is the current batch of Mopar experts that can't provide any definative proof/photos of any existing D Darts that lends to the myth. None surviving today builds its myth status I guess. I have a feeling they were all cut up as soon as they came out of the factory and got into the racer's hands. It wasn't a very pretty car, and the competition also had bigger and better small blocks. A little 273 in a mediocre looking factory package just didn't garner the attention and documentation of, say, the 1968 factory effort of the S/S Hemi Darts and Barracudas. Heck, even the BIG program in 1966 and 1967 for Mopar sort of got lost as well. Those were the WO/RO Hemi Coronets and GTX's. They were not at all as successful as the 64-65 Hemi cars, as the66-67's got beat by the Ford and GM camps stepping up their efforts. It wasn't until 1968 that Mopar got back on track with the S/S Hemi cars. I guess the 66-67 years could be considered as the "Lost Period" in the Mopar factory drag racing effort and the 1966 D-Dart fell into that group. Plus it was the only small block and we all know how the small block (of any displacement) is looked down upon in the muscle car world. :boring:

    That's the thing to do.:TU:

Especially before restoring, buying or building a car with the intent to race at P/S.

A D/Dart would not be legal because they all came with tube headers from the factory(supposedly). It seems like I have seen at least 2 documeted D/Darts on the web under restoration.

The headers were shipped in the trunk of the car. A nice new set of Doug's Headers! That would make one of these eligable wouldn't it?? :Do No:

I was contacted today by a D/Dart owner who was doing a "google" on the D/Dart to see if anything popped up on the web. He was referenced to this post! Here is a website with the most comprehensive info I have EVER seen on the D/Dart. Some very neat-o period drag racing photos are on this site. Now I can say that I have finally seen pictures of a real D/Dart!!

    http://www.seriousviewers.com/D-Dart/ddart.htm

There were only 50 built. All white with a red interior. The gentleman who contacted me owns the very first one built, the former Ted Spehar "Politician" D/Dart, and he just sold his other Dart recently to a man in Pennsylvania!

Very interesting Frank, didn't know much about those cars. Notice that the Speher car has a Carter on it, not the Holley.

Well, I just got word from Dan and Bob about the eligibilty of my customer's 1969 350/300 Caprice convertible that opened this can of worms.
The Caprice is not eligible for the PSMCDR with only the 350/300. If it were a 427 car then it would better fit the image of the PSMCDR.
I can understand and respect that decision. I was "on the fence" in regards to this car as well, but hoping for the best. I guess my customer has to look for another project in time for the 2008 PSMCDR instead!!

I was thinking about Pegleg's car and wondered if a Corvair Spyder (or Corsa?) would be legal in Pure Stock...:Brow: :Brow: :Brow: I've seen them in the 12's, 13's with a little tweak to the hair dryer waste gate, 14's are a piece of cake. They sure don't have a traction problem. It is after all, a performance image car.:Do No: :Do No: :Do No:

    Dave,
Or another blower Y Block, the automatics were quicker and more consistent that the three speeds. Oh yeah, forgot, it's a Ford!!:Dou: :bla:

Even if a Turbo Corvair was ok'd they dont have enough rear gear to get the boost up. We usta run 5.20x12 tires to get the revs up and the tires to spin, and, 5.20x12's aint legal in pure stock. The tiny tires sure did work though.

I understood the later Corvairs transaxle was really a hybrid of the Muncie 4 speed and the GMC pickup differential. Thought I recalled the "Turboniques" group in Lansing running some big time pickup gears in their cars.

Last I heard (long time ago) they were running a Chevy II with a solid axle and a GMC inline 6 with the turbos.

I can see how the smaller tires would help.

Are tyou sure the PSMCDR rules state you can't run a smaller tire? In most cases that would be a disaster...........not there, though. I agree! :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:
