I have never seen ghost stripes or ghost flames in person, so I don't know how they work. I just know what I have heard. All the picture of seen the stripes look very faint in the pictures and all poster states that the picture does not do the paint justice. I would like my car to look just like the car in the picture during the day or sunlight, but look black and night.

I'm sure he'll chime in, but here's a members car that has sorta kinda "ghost" flames on gsx stripes. I always thought it was subtle yet really cool. I don't know that they are actually "ghosted in" per say, but are a bit more low key and look awesome nonetheless. [IMG][IMG]

I honestly don't know as I haven't seen this particular car at night, but if he chimes in I'm sure he (Steve Reynolds) can shed some light (haha, get it??) on that.

If I remember Wheelz sent me a pic of a really cool GS in kind of a burnt orange colour with ghost stripes. Hope he still has a pic he can send you.

If it is dark enough, you may not see the flames. Maybe not the response you were thinking of, though. My idea of flames is a little different, and nowhere near that subtle. I hope to eventually get the time and develop the skills for this kind of flame painting (sans the skull stuff) on my Buick.

It doesn't haven't to be exact, but I just want to be able to see the stripes good during in the sunlight. From research I found a cobra that was painted in a similar paint job. The poster said it is painted black with ghost metallic purple stripes. I will post some pics in a few.

If the color difference is small, it will not be obvious after dark. Maybe that's what you are after?

Maybe so, I just need to see some good pictures of some or talk to somebody that has them so I can get a good idea on what it looks like. Did you check out the link?

My idea of ghost flames are that they are barely visible. Driving by you would not see them. But at a show, up close... it hits you

Thanks for the clarification. I guess ghost stripes is not what I'm looking for. My daughter's favorite color is purple. She has been asking me for a while to paint it purple. She wants wants it all purple. I told her I'm not painting the whole car purple. I want it to look mean and purple is not mean looking. I guess i will just stick to that color concept in the pic.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

Ghost stripes/flames can vary a lot depending on the amount of contrast between the colors. Find a reputable painter and tell him/her exactly what you want. And, before the paint hits your ride, check it out on a sample piece.

My little girl favorite color is purple. She has been begging me to paint the car purple. I want it to look mean look and purple is not mean looking, so I told her I would add some purple in there somewhere. I think what I'm going to do is paint the same colors that are in that picture. That way she can see the purple at day and at night. Does anybody know how I can figure out what shade if purple that is on that car?

Find a paint guy thats close to you, maybe one noted for doing some custom work.
They should have samples of 'candy' colors. Seems like you want that dark deep maroon/purple color.

"Ghost Flames" are not necessarily a particular method of paint, but more of a "barely visible" set of flames. There are several ways to achieve this effect, but I won't go into that here.

What I did on this hood was to simply paint flames on, but I didn't use the traditional methods for ghost flames. I simply used a very light coat of "white pearl" over the black base coat, starting very light in the front and getting heavier near the tips of the flames. Then I added just a little color with some blue, purple and yellow candy base coat near the flame tips. Once done you clear coat everything, wet sand, (although for this race car I didn't go nuts with the wet sanding) and buff.

Not truly ghost flames but they don't "jump out at you" either. I wanted to be able to barely see them from the stands as I was racing.

And as far as I can tell at night or in very low light conditions they all but disappear.

I did a very similar thing on the hood of my tow vehicle, only I did flame over flame and no other color other than the white pearl. I'll post a pic of that when I can.

    Steve
