Ok everybody, the results are in!I just changed my oil the other day to Royal Purple and my engine runs so much easier and smoother along with a noticible power increase(seat of the pants est. 6-7hp?)Also ,engine starts and doesn't have to be warmed up any where near as long as it did before, before I can start driving!Fuel savings right there!Just waiting on your car to warm up!:Brow: Can't say enough good things about it so far!!!:TU:
royal purple at work we run high volume high pressure (they have a 500 hp input motor im not sure of the actual numbers) they just switched to royal purple lubricants in the compressor. the power input has decreased considerably and efficency's have improved noticably (they run efficenciys when you have atleast one of these running 24 hrs a day normally there are 2 large ones and one smaller one (250 hp)) it took about 2 weeks for the actual performance to be noticed (from sludge build up from the old oil) they recommend it at work (I work for the leading supplier of small air cooled engines in the world) Nate bungie cords off of the opposite seat work too to hold the door shut. (guy I used to work with had a rusted out el camino and did that for the drivers door)
   Yeah it never fails! Jusy when you think things are going pretty good something else craps out on you!:stmad: Oh well, I guess that's how we learn from life.:Smarty: Just wish I could learn in warmer weather:shock: But as far as the oil goes it does seem that the longer it's in there the better it runs.Twice already I have had to turn my idle screw down because the engine seemed to be working less!:TU:
Can anyone recommend the breakin procedures if we want to use RP? I'm guessing use conventional 10/30 for the first 200 - 300 miles, then at the 1st oil change switch to RP? Also, who carries it, besides speed shops (a gazillion $$ per quart) or mail order?
Jeff , Royal Purple has a web site that can tell you where to find it in your area. It's at www.royalpurple.com It seems mostly NAPA stores from what I can see for this area should be around $4.50 to $4.99/quart.As far as your break in procedures, yes you want to use a conventional oil for the break-in and then switch to RP.:TU:
oil Jeff, JC Whitney sells Royal Purple for $5.19 a quart. My local speed shop sells it for $6.99.I bought 48 quarts and got free shipping and no sales tax a savings of over$112. So,who you gonna call?:Smarty:
:Brow: I got mine here in Desmoines from a place called Jocko's Auto Parts for $4.50 a quart and thats the price I've been seeing most other places also i.e. Autozone, Parts America etc... this was for the 10w-30 and not the racing oil, which is more expensive.
OK, so now I'm confused again...o No: ou: Jeff, what RP oil did you use? Is their normal 10/30 stuff the one that gives you HP benefits? Or is that just the race oil? *************EDIT*******************EDIT************* I just went to their webpage and got the answer. You want the OEM oil. The only online sources I have found are Jegs and Northernautoparts. Both for 4.99/qt (plus shipping). The only places near me are 2 speed shops known for doubling the price on everything Pep Boys sells...:af:
northern Northern auto parts also sells royal purple OEM oils are 4.99 per qt. racing is 8.34 per qt streight weight is also 4.99 per qt. have a new one of there catalogs beside me though no nothing about there service.
We used RP and Red Line in our circle track cars. Thought the Red Line was a little better.. but RP sponsered us for a while. I am going to use Red Line. It is a little more expensive but the guys at My Oil Shop are Buick people. Ron was great to deal with on some parts I bought from him and we are always talking about dealing with the people on our forum. http://www.myoilshop.com
Doug, can you tell me why the guys at your shop prefer Redline over Royal Purple? I'm just a curious person that likes having more than one choice in life.
Not a lot of difference. We had about 5 more pounds of oil pressure on a hot engine at idle (1200 rpm) and happened to set a lap record when we ran the Red Line. But track conditions are more important than oil. Then again racers are a superstitious lot. They are both great products. Check the link for "My Oil Shop" I am not affiliated with them in any way. I just had a great experience when I made a purchase from Ron. Unfortunatly my local speed shop is closed because my friend who owned it died suddenly. Was a great Buick person. Used to have a boat tailed Rivi on NOS.
