No Codes written anywhere in Owner's Manual and knock-outs long gone, so time to see if locks original (sure like to have new keys cut from Codes rather than duping 47-year-old keys). Started with glovebox, since it's easy. Woohoo...there it was on cylinder. Not looking forward to attacking tilt column just to pop lock...I yearn for good old days when all you needed was a paper clip...thanks to George, I know about possible flashing over tang slot if I do it. I've "heard" door cylinder also has code...anyone know for sure, and if so, is it actually easier to get door cylinder out?
Before you go to all that trouble. Try having the keys duplicated. Because the cuts on the keys and the tumblers have worn together after 47 years. If you cut the new keys from the codes you may find the new cuts do not match with worn tumblers.
Ive posted this before, but I have a locksmith in Georgia that is fantastic. He can make keys from a picture and re-key lock cylinders. He even has GM key blanks. Guys name is Walt. Email is= keyman1@windstream.net
Yes sir, I did it for 30 years also. I've cut keys from a pic and also looking through the window at the keys hanging from the ignition. That's why I posted my opinion. Good key man is hard to find these days.
Did that, duped ignition key works intermittently. Guessing keyways worn too, and duplicating machine removes slack by forcing key one way or other to make cuts. Ignition is more sensitive 6-tumbler lock...more likely to complain. Figured I'd try cutting from code...unless ignition's a replacement. Plus it would be nice to add key codes to documentation.
Appreciate info. May have to go that way if cutting from code doesn't work. I've re-keyed lots of home Schlage pin tumbler locks, but no sidebar car locks...
You can get entire lock sets for your car from almost any Chevelle parts vendor; They use the same locks.
As with everything else about car, primary goal is keeping everything as "original" as possible...even key coded locks. Carefully re-read shop manual...code on ignition only...gotta find my lock plate tool...
