I bought 3 cans of Krylon 300 degree Buick-red engine paint, started painting and all seemed right with the world. About a week later (today) I had my intake out in the sunlight and noticed it was more of a burnt-orange with a very slight blood-red tinge. This is not the same Buick red I used 20 years ago when I rebuilt my 69 350. WTF?:af: Who makes a true Buick-red? Thanks,
Thank you, Drew, for starting this thread. I am looking for Buick Red, too. I'll be following this thread with interest!
I think the group consensus has been in favor of Duplicolor DH1608. Unfortunately, the Duplicolor people recently bought out VHT and is changing over the high heat paints to the VHT palette - which is not prefereed. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=168363&highlight=dh1608 Drive/call around and see if anybody in your area has any left on their shelves! Best Wishes,
Drew, I bought a case of the 2114 a couple of months ago and the color looks just like it used to years ago, no problem. Did you do anything odd for prep? Devon
As far as my preparation goes: bead-blasted, blew it down w/ compressed air and then wiped down w/ lacquer thinner. I don't think this is an issue. I did notice that it seemed a bit orange with I sprayed on the paint, but I just figured it would change as it dries. What bothers me is, from my experience, these high temp paints tend to darken as they cure with heat. My guess is Krylon laid-off their experienced senior QA inspector and replaced him with some minimum wage green-card goof-ball that has no idea what Buick-red looks like or what a Buick actually is. If some of you guys are happy with their version of Krylon Buick-red think I guess I just got an off color batch... which again goes back to Krylon's QA ability.
The DH1608 is my choice for sure. I bought a case of it from Summit just yesterday, and it shipped already. I have no idea how much they have in stock, but I couldnt find any here in Austin. I'm redoing my 66 Nailhead so I had to have some.. Part Number Part Description QTY Tracking Number Carrier: Est. Frank, I don't think you'll be happy with the DH1608 ceramic red. It's just not the right hue of red. But, I have an idea. Let's get up a group purchase of Krylon 2114 and see if we can find some. I don't think there is much around. (I could be wrong.) So, plan B is to get in touch with Krylon and see how many aerosol cans we would need to purchase in order to get them to run a batch... They might do it for 500 or 1,000 cans. I think Sherwin-Williams owns Krylon. I have just about given up on getting the correct Krylon 2114 and I'm ready to get ot work trying to get the right part # and correct hue of red. We could sell it at the GS Nationals and the BPG Meet and here on V8Buick. That is, if we could get a price that the Buick gang could live with. Everyone!!! What do you think? I would be happy to do the leg work and see if we could get a group purchase and make an order. Anyway, It's a plausible idea which might or might not work. Who's game????
Hmmm; I've painted two engines with it, and almost everyone else likes it too. Here are a couple of pics... have you used it yourself?
Put me in! I would buy 10 cans just to keep in my stock. I thought poston and TA sold the correct color? At least they did a few years ago, right? I even bought 2 cans last year and I got some crappy red and they eventually sent me the right color. I have to try to find that reciept!
Yes we sell it and use it on engines and it looks and holds up great. The main area to watch for is the exhaust ports if you painted the heads, it my start to burn a bit if it isnt *burned in* right. A solution is to shoot the exhaust ports with a high temp/heat red paint then shoot the Krylon Buick Red over that for the color.
Good looking engine Frank. I wish I was that far with the Willys. Unfortunately, I'm just in the real early stage of tracking down pieces/parts. I'm jealous.......Thom
