Got a basic question here, but what's the difference between large valve iron heads from a 71 Riviera and iron stage 1 heads?

What's a good flow out of either with some porting?

    Thanks!

The valves are not the same. While the diameter is the same, the stage 1 used the more expensive swirled polished valves.

Thank you, so really, if port work was done and heads were freshened up, then it really doesn't matter much if new valves were selected?

Any idea on good intake and exhaust flows with port work?

Take a look at some of the iron headed builds here.
There's more than enough potential to meet most people's needs.
What are your goals and how are you trying to get there?
If you know what the capabilities are, and peruse the build types then you can determine how much effort you want into them and who could help if not DIY.
(sorry for the non-answer but not sorry. I prefer people spend more time searching the forums to familiarize with the build types in order to focus in on specifics)

  5. a stock stage 1 head flows aprox 225/150 cfm. a well ported stage 1 head will be 290/175 Cfm the numbers given to you for those ported heads in your parts wanted post seem a little low to me

Dang you... I use that often at work when technicians call me about something they could easily look up!

450ish hp, iron parts, streetable, pump gas.

I'm in the preliminary stages and just trying to figure things out right now.

You'll need decent heads for the above goal, nothing crazy just bowl work and a nice valve job with Hi Flo valves, fairly mild cam and done. You'll want a big split in duration. Will need a solid 9.5+ comp

  10. your before numbers seem high. were those heads worked on before?

They were worked , then Greg touched them up, took "Tuna" to 10.70s at 3600lb

Thank you! So nothing crazy, what type of flow is that about?

I'm thinking I'd go with the TA 288-94h, 230/240 and 114 lobe separation.

Can stock cast pistons handle this or go with forged?

Do a search for aluminum and iron head 455 builts-parts and power comparisons. There's a build in that thread using a 288-94 cam. 465 hp n 545tq
