Still looking for a half decent 1966 steering wheel for a full-size in black. Prefer Electra/Wildcat, but will entertain a nice LeSabre one if it's crack free.
After much searching, I just decided to repair my original steering wheel. I took a few weeks, a can of paint, a can of clear, but I now have a nice steering wheel again. I couldn't find a reproduction, or nice one. the closest I came was one with a couple of cracks I used for the horn parts I was missing. Good luck with your search. I sincerely hope you have better luck than I did with my '66 Wildcat's steering wheel.
Yeah, I've got one other one that's pretty much cracked in the same places as the one that's still in the car. There's chunks missing and the cracks don't even line up anymore. The 64-66 wheel must have been the flimsiest one ever made by a car manufacturer, I have yet to see a good one. I'm wondering if it's worth going the restoration route considering the car still is exposed to sunlight in the summer and cold in the winter. I'd be afraid of my newly restored wheel cracking up inside the first two weeks I'd use the car.
It is worth it if you do the restoration yourself. Otherwise, it is quite expensive. You have to grind out the cracks and sand the whole wheel, then fill in the cracks. I took about two week to do the work, but it came out nice. it is a driving restoration. If you are looking for a show quality restoration, that would be more involved. Ray had a sport wheel in the car that, while intact, looked wrong. I like the look of the original wheel.
I treasure the “good” wheels I find. Got lucky a couple times with part hoarders too. I’ll post pics if I can get to one that is about a 7/10.
Marc, As an alternative I have taken a 66 wood wheel, painted them epoxy gloss black and installed in a couple of Wildcats. Talk about a beautiful wheel!!! And with the black and silver interiors on the Cats I have, it is smoking HOT! I know, it is a sickness!
