I figured this was a no-brainer...NOT! :( I looked up the correct cable in Rock Auto and they say NOT for TH400. I've got an automatic in my 1970 GS 455. There is no listing for the cable WITH auto. I went to the Wagner, Raybestos, and AC Delco sites and nothing. My spring is rotted off and the cable is not looking too good either. Any suggestions? Is there really a different cable for automatic trans?

    Bill,
TH 400 trans cars use a different front cable. That is due to the fact that it goes thru the "slot" of the TH 400 Cross Member.

I think Cars might sell them. Ames Performance may also sell them.

It is actually a different length because the transmission crossmember is positioned further back on the frame. The intermediate cable is also a different length to compensate.
Inline Tube has any and all cables for these cars.

I bought some of their cables for a TH400 swap project before. They worked.

Many years ago I did a t400 swap on a 69 Cutlass convertible. Got everything I needed from yearone.com

It's funny - the only car with this exception in rockauto is the GS 455.

I've gotten prices from $80 to $45. CARS, in-line, OPGI. That's the one cable! Non-TH 400 cars go for $20 and you can get them anywhere. Note that it is 50" long, about 5" longer than the non-TH400 cable.

The TH350 and all of the 4-speeds use the same cables because the transmission crossmember is in the same location.
The TH400 is the only on that moves the crossmember back, and justifies having a different length front cable. The length of the hook that attaches to the crossmember is a different length too.

$10 plus shipping. How long is it supposed to be? The reason I am asking is that it is marked with a part number of INL365 which is supposed to be for TH350/4 speed but I know for sure it didn't work so they sent another. I will measure once you give me length info.

A follow-up: Never one to do it the easy way, and I felt the need to develop another vendor for us, I worked with Greg Burns at bruinbrakecables.com to add the 455/thm400 front brake cable to their catalog. I sent them my old one and he came up with the correct replacement cable. Part number is #A92358-455 and he sells it for $36.00. The part looks great and has the plastic wrapped wire. It fit well and was "easy" to put in. Here's a comparison:
