Thanks James. I've got 70 sitting on the floor that I believe came from Tx. I can't see the 2 letter code, hopefully the VIN will show.
No luck yet. It's a 738 block, 786 heads but I can't locate any numbers yet. Guess Ill have to pull the head or timing cover when I get a chance.:blast:
Andy, Don't waste your time removing the heads or the front cover looking for the stampings. If they are visible, they can bee seen with the parts still on the block. Yeah, been a member of the email list for years. That site has grown a bunch since the beginning. That's where I started back before V8, tons of awesome info :beers2: I planned cracking it open anyway to see what its got in it. Supposedly a Stg motor w/ hi-comp pistons(but aren't they all!!)

Like chevy SS blocks? I know of a 396 with a muncie 4 speed that was pulled out of a 1970 (i think) SS Chevelle
The discussion is about BUICK 1970 blocks with the SS stamping code for that year stage1 455 blocks. Nothing to do with SS chevrolet. In 71 the stamping code was TS, if you get the idea.

Wow - the car must be pretty bad if it's not worth fixing with the correct #'s matching engine. Is it wrecked, rusted, or both? What is the date code on the block?
Too bad about the car. You never know, maybe the next SS block that turns up can be re-united with the car. Keep looking at all those cores!
Following on Jim's pasting of that thread ... Real deal Stage 1 pair. Here's what I have........ Block is a B 20 date code, cast #1231786, SS code, VIN# 40H273714. Head (only 1...) cast # 1231786, L 13 date code. Intake cast# 1231786, date code C 19. Crank cast# 1379242. I have no idea if these parts are the ones born with this block. I have a 455 Stage 1 block and heads in my garage (70-72). I will have to look and see where the #'s are stamped. I'm just south of Dayton, Oh. Jeff
Hey there I live near Ottumwa and I know of at least 3 sources where a 70 stage 1 block or tranny may be right now! I am currently deployed to Afghanistan right now but I will check with my buddies around there. (when I go home)! How long has the motor been out of your car? I also know of at least 2 cracked Stage 1 blocks sitting on garage floors in the erea as well. (have been sitting for more than 15 years)
Sorry to burst your bubbles but I went to seek the 455 blocks out and was a little disappointed in what I found. of the 8 blocks 4 are 70 stage 1 blocks mine (I own the car) another was pulled in the early 80's and is sitting on the garage floor at a friends house the car is sitting at another friends house and has been parted parted out. (is a shell and a frame) a third was also pulled in the late 80's from a car about to be crushed. (this motor now resides in a real 70 GSX.) modified to his taste and also being used to keep the miles off of his X. the 4th and final block is the original GSX motor complete and unmolested with just under 100,000 miles on it. It does need rebuilt but the owner will decide on that later on. (by the way he is the original owner of the car and now loves rubbing it in with his chebby loving classmates how he bought that "ugly yellow car" and now more than one wish it was theirs! as for the other blocks they came from other cars that were crushed. SR, SF, SF, SF blocks respectfully All appear to be Stage 1 Equiped with the chrome valve covers and Stage 1 fuel pumps but not much else. (spun journals and spun rod bearings plague these motors and are now being used for the upkeep of the other running blocks! SpeedyGump1
