I'm trying to find out the correct method for mounting a NOS GS rear spoiler. I looked at the link on the buick performance group web site (http://www.buickperformance.com/rearwing.htm) which states, "This shows the two access holes to tighten the lag screws that hold the rear wing to the trunk lid. Under the head of each lag screw is a large washer to distribute the load of the spoiler to the surrounding metal with causing any distorion". Now if you look at the year one online catalog (http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/fbshopmain2.asp?cat=2), the show a reproduction bracket that's supposed to help hold the spoiler, "This is an exclusive Year One reproduction of these rare pieces with the correct shape and contours. Fits original spoilers". My shop manual does not show any info about the rear spoiler. So what is correct, should I get the repro brackets, should I use lag screws with washers (what is a lag screw?). Also being that the spoiler is two pieces from the factory and there are threads in the fiberglass which I really cant see as being durable in the long run (don't want spoiler to fly off on the highway) how can I reinforce the set up. Drop a stud in from the inside and permenantly set it in there or drop a nut in to catch a bolt? Please advise me any one with a factory spoiler or someone really knowledgeable in this area. The spoiler is one-piece unit for original 70-2 GSX cars. The one in my article came from a wrecked GSX. Lag screws are like sheet metal screws, coarse thread. If you have threaded inserts, you have a repro version. The repro versions are much lighter and you can use screws that match the thread inserts and large "fender" washers to distribute the load. You can also order the Y1 repro brkts. Up to you.
Allen, All three of the original 70 GSX's I have owned had the factory support brackets and lag screws which bolted into the spoiler base. I have in the past also mounted a spoilers on a regular G.S.'s without the bracket, however I beefed up the trunk lid with washers. My advice is to use the brackets. Bill
No, no threaded inserts but threaded through pedestal which I cant see as having any long term strength with constantly slamming trunk lid close and all. So my question is what is correct in installing spoiler, washers or the year one bracket. Of course I can do either, I'm trying to find out the correct "dealer" method. Also please not from other posts: Back in 1986 my father went to the local Buick dealership (Clyde Revord in Everett, WA I think) and they had a factory spoiler in stock in the parts department! It ended up becoming my birthday present. As I remember, it was also a two piece. There was a seam running lengthwise connecting the top half to the bottom half. Even as a hollow piece, it wasn't very light. It ended up on my 72 GS350. AND All the original rear spoilers were made from 2 pieces that were glued/fiberglassed together. Originally the first 70 rear spoilers didn't have a vent hole on the bottom. When they heated up in the sun, many of them blew apart along the seam. That's why they put vent holes in them.
