Anyone experience a MSD billet distributor being too tight to fit in the timing cover? I have! :Dou:

I prime my motor and found top dead center and get ready to install my new MSD billet distributor into the new TA cover and it is so tight it won't fit. so, I pull it back out and grab the caliper and it is OD of 1.283 and the ID of the TA cover is 1.279! So I call Mike at TA and he is very familiar with this and he even measures 3 other new covers off the shlf and all are between 1.78 and 1.79 ID. Sooooooo I am left with first calling MSD and talking to an engineer (which will probably go nowhere), taking it apart and taking it to my machinist and have him turn them down to fit, or get a piece of 400 grit sand paper after the shaft and sand it down to fit!

And I thought I would have the wires on and wrap it up to go to dyno today! :( No such luck!

The MSD is probably made in China now or the cover is, I thought TA made the covers but I do not know that. I have the same set up and mine fits but I bought mine in 1994.

I called MSD and they had me return it and they said they would make it right. So..... Time will tell

The tech i talked to told me not to worry. They would replace or machine it to my specs.

Now I have to box it up and wait 2 weeks to get my build finished! :ball:

I got a call from MSD engineering today and they are going to rebuild it with a new housing. They appoligized and said the over sized housing shaft was a machining mistake. They said they should have it back to me by next week. I am glad to see good customer service from MSD.

That's cool, good to hear they're going to make it right. That's what matters, it DOES SUCK you have to wait longer to get your project finished, but were human, and we ALL goof up at times, but as long as they admit they messed up and are going to correct it, I'd be ok with that:grin:

UPDATE!!!!! Kudos to MSD! They finally sent my distributor back and replaced the housing with a new one with the exact size as needed. Very good customer service although they could speed it up a tad!

Now onto finishing my build!:laugh::laugh:

I have heard that as of late, MSD has had some quality issues, but in my experience, as it also appears to be yours, they have excellent customer service. Good to hear things turned out in the end.

I once bought a used MSD box and it was missing the isolators and MSD sent them for free I have a MSD unit in a box now I have to pull it out and see if it fits. I was told the owner ran it but went back to original in his 70 stage so I think it will be fine

Mine was tight when I first got it, but if you remove it enough it self clearances.
