  1. Congrats on the car man. Looks to be a real good starting point for a project.

Thanks guys! I'm real excited about the car. I stare at it all day here at work on my computer screen and the picture of it on my wall. I keep walking out in the garage at home just to look at it and smell that old car smell. Went by the tax office and got it titled and registered yesterday. So it should be pretty official now, just got to wait for the new title to come in 2-3 weeks.

I plan on trying to sort a few things out under the hood when I get home. Or at least try anyway. I took the air cleaner off last night to find that there is no hose running from the PCV to the Carb. In fact they have the port plugged in the back of the carb and the PCV Valve is stuck in the valve cover just venting under the hood. Also the vaccum advance on the distributor isn't hooked up either. Luckily they were smart enough to leave the vaccum hooked up to the trans and the brake booster, thank goodness.

I have a feeling I am going to run into a lot of "incorrect" fixes on this car. But I will just have to fix them as I go. Just part of the game. Loving this car though none the less.

    Congrats!
Always nice to get an example with good sheetmetal and chrome.....those are difficult and expensive to replace.
My two Ca cars had relatively crappy interiors compared to my Pa cars.... everything from dash pads to chrome and window channels were in worse condition. weird.
The Astro blue exterior/ blue interior is a hit..... here's a pic of mine.... and what yours could be....:TU:

I can only assume that the seats were re-done at some time, but not by the guy I bought it from. The seats are a little rougher shape than what the pictures show, but not by much. They do look really good.

Thanks Walt! That was the first thing Don said when we found out it used to be Astro Blue, "Hey, your car will be just like Walt's! And his is gorgeous!"

Do you know what size tires your are running in that pic? They look good and I need to by a new set. Was thinking about getting the BFG Radial Red Lines in 225/70/R14, but just not sure how they would look. Don't know if they would look too wide or what? Trying to decide between the 215/70 and the 225/70, but haven't found any good pictures of either on our cars with the 14x6 road wheels.

Did you wear out those rear tires already?
I'm using 15x7 wheels. Tires are 275/60-15 and 215/70-15 in the front.
You can fit up to a 255/60-15 in the rear on the 15x7 wheels, but it might get close to the fender lip if your rear isn't perfectly centered.
I have a 12 bolt rear in this GS that tucks the tires in an extra half inch per side... that centers the tires in the wheelwell so you can go up to a 275.
I have 235/60-15's on the front of my other 66's.........
I like the 15 inchers since they are easier to find (tires too), and I feel they look better on a big car like the GS. Love redlines, but damn, they're expensive!

I wish that were the case. Unfortunately it was almost a tragic situation. Apparently the tires were worse off than they appeared. I knew they would need to be replaced sometime in the near future, but didn't think it would be immediately. Don lives about 45 min from me. I was taking the car over to his place so he could see it in person for the first time. I got about 15 min from his house and could hear the jack start vibrating around in the trunk. Pulled over and checked the car out, but didn't notice anything up with the tires. So I took it easy going the rest of the way. Well I slowed to turn on Don's street and could feel the rear of the car going up and down. So I putted down his road and into the drive. Come to find out the belt in the driver rear tire had broke and the tread had a huge bulge in it. Also a split in the rubber on the sidewall formed on both rears. Luckily Don had a spare set of wheels and tires that we pulled off his latest '66. We slapped those on mine so I could go home.

I've got the 225-14 Coker Silvertown redlines on mine, like them alot and traction isn't bad. With the narrow original rear it can look kinda undersized, but it has kind of a sleeper look to it...

When I get everything sorted out I plan to go to the thin white stripe Silvertowns - too much red on my car now, althought I love redlines on anything else.

I thought about the 15's, but thats alot of unsprung weight I dont need, and more power to turn them...But I do like the look on my '71 with 235's in the front and 255's in the rear.

Thanks for the pics Rhett! Those look good! Like Walt said, the Redlines are pricey, but in the grand scheme of things I shouldn't be replacing tires that often as long as I keep my foot out of it. My car doesn't have Posi.....yet, so I don't plan on doing many burnouts for a while anyway. So a set of tires should last me several years at least. I have a feeling putting new redlines on my car is gonna be like hanging a chandelier in an out house, but redlines sure do look good on a set of road wheels.

I saw this one when it was on craigslist and thought of purchasing it. I remember that the seller has a 67 gs400 and a 70 gs for sale. Did you talk to the seller about those cars? Have you seen them?
    Greetings,

Got the new suspension under the car. WOW! What a difference! Ran into a little issue with the lower control arms. Looks like they are aftermarket so the bushings were different. Had to make a long trip to town to get the right ones, but its all done now. Love the new correct look of the car. Here are a before and after shot for comparison.

Haha. Yeah that's a 1985 M923. Its a military 5 ton 6x6. Its a bad mofo for sure. Plan on taking it mudding when it cools down a bit.

That looks great.Did you install new springs ft and rear?

Thanks. Yeah we installed quite a bit. Basically rebuilt the entire suspension.

New springs, shocks, center link, end links, idler arm, swaybar bushings and end links, upper and lower control arm bushings and ball joints. I have the rear control arm bushings but didn't have time to get them installed. Also changed out the bearings, races, and seals in both front hubs.

That looks much better. I like the size tires it has now and usually I like raised white letters, but it looks "right" the way it is.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Those wheels and tires are borrowed, but they are the correct size for what originally came on the car. The tires mounted on my road wheels are in really bad shape and I found cracks in two of my road wheels. So I am in the process of trying to make a complete set again so I can get them back on the car. Right now the plan is to put some 225/70/R14 BFG Silvertown Redline Radials on it. They should be about the same height, but close to an inch wider. Will look like the wheel and tire combo on Rhett's '65 that he posted pictures of earlier in this thread.
