So many of us ar such gluttons for punishment. A group of masachists we are. I will watch with interest as you restore this car.
CustomD1, The color of your car looks like the one I am restoring. The paint on mine is so bad I can't really tell if it is. My car is Hunter Green wth white buckets and a black carpet. My car came with no door panels so I assumed they were white but I noticed yours were black. Do they look like they are original? Does anyone know if the build sheet spells out the door panel color? If you don't mine, could you post a picture of the data plate on the fire wall? The paint code for Hunter green is 48 for 1972.
Corect, hunter Green, white Interior Including The Door Panels. The Panels In The Car Along With The Backs Of The Front Seat Have Been Replaced, looks To Be Out Of A 70 Cutlass S. I Will Of Course Be Puting The Corect Delux Interior Panels With The Wood Grain Inserts. Dash And Carpet Are Black, this Car Came With A Green Vinyl Top But I Will Not Be Puting It Back On,the Next Owner Can Do That If He Wants It Per The Build Sheet, every Thing Else Will Be Per The Build Sheet. Actualy This Car Is Not That Bad,i Own A Restoration Shop Here In Mo And Iv Done Lotts Worse Than This One,hey Its All Metal And Plastic It Can All Be Fixed.
Put the green vinyl top on..It will be a total 1 of car, afterall if it's a true 72 GSX,there are only 44 made. I know a green top may not be the best color choice, but it makes it one unique car..Please do it for me....lol
I CANT DO IT.:eek2: ..............NO#1 I HATE VINYL TOPS ESPECIALY ON ANY A BODY MODEL IT JUST KILLS THE BODY LINES OF THE ROOF,NO#2 I HATE GREEN AS IT IS (EVEN THOUGH THE HUNTER IS KINDA COOL),SO A GREEN VINYL TOP IS OUT (FOR ME ANYWAY) IF THE NEXT OWNER WANTS IT ON ,IT WILL BE A EASY ADD FOR HIM OR HER,IF I WOULD PUT IT ON (WHICH IM NOT) THEN THE NEXT OWNER MAY o No: (AND PROBABLY WOULD) HAVE THE SAME OPINION ON THE GREEN TOP IT WOULD BE VERY DIFICULT IN REMOVING IT AND TRYING TO BLEND THE ROOF WITH THE QUARTERS. SO NO TOP,EVEN FOR YOU..........LOL:laugh: . DON
Nice score. It looks like you've got your work cut out for you. I second that opinion , though, about puting the vinyl roof back on. You can either say it's as it was when it was built or you can't , and I'd put her back . What wheel/tire combo did it come with on the Sloan docs ?
My vote is to do it by the numbers, whether you like it or not on a car that rare. As delivered to the first owner.
This may be already known to you, but the stripes look incorrect, looks like they were re-done at some point over the years. That being said, I wouldn't use them as a guide for measuring for repaint. Good luck with the car! I won't annoy you with any more vinyl top opinions (but my '71 has one and it's staying). :bglasses:
CustomD1, My 72GS, Stage 1 that I mentioned eariler that is hunter green also has a green vinyl top. I am sorry to say but the vinyl top is going back on because it is a rare color combo. I am also a believer in keeping things original (just my 2 cents) I would think putting the vinyl top back on would be a great deal of work after the car was finished and painted. The rivit style pins would have to be welded back on. My car was built in Framingham, MA. Where was yours built? Also my vinyl top is in very bad shape and very difficult to tell the exact color of the vinyl. I have sent away to a few vinyl suppliers for samples. So far it looks like SMS has the closest but I am not sure. If you don't mind and if you have any areas that the vinyl was not exposed to the weather so the true color is represented, I would appreciate a small sample piece. This would help me to get the correct color. As you know green is not a popular color for vinyl tops. Let me know and I can also send you a prepaid envelope to mail the sample if you have one. Thanks, Richie
Sorry Rich, the Oe Top Has Been Gone Off This Car A Long Time,it Has Had A Cheap Paint Job Put On It At One Point In Its Life And They Must Have Removed The Top At That Time ,even The Studs For The Chrome Moulding Have Been Removed. And No I Wont Be Using The Stripes Shown As Any Kind Of Guide, they Rae Definitly Wrong. You May Notice The Ram Air Hood Is Gone As Well As The Grill Emblems And Fender Emblems,it Looks To Have Been Replaced With A Standard Skylark Front Clip. The Neat Thing I Found Is What Looks To Be A Factory(still Trying To Determen That) Front Spoiler, new Still In The Bag With The Mounting Hardware And Instructions Siting In The Trunk Along With The Front Section Of The Ram Air Cleaner (housing Was Gone). The Sonomatic Radio And The Under Dash 8 Track Were Allso Missing, the Rear Wing Is The Factory Item And Looks To Have The Corect Mounting Hardware. Iv Been Trying To Get The Engine Numbers Off The Block But It Looks Like Ill Have To Pull The Drivers Manifold Off To Get Them, doesnt Look To Have Ever Been Removed From The Car. Anyway It Is What It Is. Im Sure It Wont Get That Vinyl Top Back On............
Ps Rich; You Can Get Any Color Top In Green That Looks Close,to Get It Dead On Just Pull The Color Code Off Your Builb Tag For The Top,and You Can Get Exact Color Vinyl Die Mixed At Your Local Dupont Supply Shop. Sem Makes Good Dye But Dupont Can Actualy Mix The Exact Factory Color In Dye Form And Woork Excellent,it Doesnt Look Painted And It Will Never Fade Or Peel,it The Same Formula That The Facory Still Use Today To Dye There Vinyl And Plastic Parts, most All Factory Pieces Are Black When Made And Then They Are Dyed To What Ever The Build Of The Car States The Color Combo Is. Iv Used It For Years Even On Seats And Have Had 0 Problems.
Pss; If Any Body Has A Problem With The No Vinyl Top Going Back On They Can Speak Directly To My Complaint Department In Person!!!! His Name Is Chief And He Is In My Avitar Pic............lol Just Kiding
