You know the old saying "Going fast costs money, how fast do you want to go? " If you can't weld you are behind the 8 ball to start. Kind of hard to be"a car guy" without welding skills! Its winter now so why don't you see if you can take a welding course? Thats how I started. I now sometimes weld at my job and get payed for it!!
I went with a 9 inch because it was cheap!! I found a Lincoln Versailles (58 inch with rear disc brakes)rear end ( 4 of them actually for spares) and built one for my 86 regal! It wasen't that hard to fab the brackets!! Really! I was a fun project ! I have about $350 into my rear end! Not including the new rotors and rebuilt calipers. This was my second 9 inch the first ( car housing- 28 spline)ended up in a stock car that ran for 2 years and won a championship. Check out e-bay for gear sets. I have bought a few from Nascar teams very cheap!! ( 50-80 bucks) They use them once and get rid of them. It did take awhile to find a posi (tru trac) as I was really cheap!!! LOL!
LEARN TO WELD!!! It will pay in the future!!

The reason I used a 9" in my 83 Regal was that my welding buddy wanted me to go with it. I would have rather used a 12 bolt Chevy. I started with a 9" that we narrowed and had a machanist friend respline the axles. That was not a good idea. The FIRST pass after putting on a new set of M/T DOT Radials, I broke both axles in about the first 6" of the track. I then ordered a pair of Mosier axles with 5/8" studs and replaced the mini-spool with a real one. I use a 12 Chevy under my 67 racecar and have not had any trouble with it in 6+ years of hard racing. If you can get your hands on a 8.5 and then put good axles and spool in it, you should be set. Setup correctly it should take you into 10s without a problem.

I have a posi 8.5" rearend with 3.42 gears out of a 1986 Buick Grand National.
It was working fine when I removed it from the Buick.
It has surface rust and will probably need some of the brake components replaced.
    I will take $500.
I live in South Carolina but will be visiting my family Thanksgiving weekend in Rockland County, NY.
(About 40 minutes northwest of Manhattan.)
Let me know if you're interested and I can send you some pictures.

Have 8in rims w/ 3 1/2in back spacing - I think 12.5 x15 Mickeys will fit, it will be tight but I'm going to try.

wow, where did I get 5.5" from? ..... Let me know if your 12.5"'s work!.... Do you have the drums in the rear? I just bought wilwoods for the back along with the new style big bearing ford ends, 8.5 rear stock width..... Not sure if that makes a dif or not?

5.5 backspacing works with a 12 bolt (like 70 Monte Carlo) under a "G" body with 28X11.50X15 ET Streets. I know from experience.

Ya I am running drums, If you want I can snap some pic's of wheel clearance with the 11.5 streets to give you an idea of what you will have. You might note that the body can favor one side or the other which can be adjusted out if you want to take the time. My Moser unit seems to sit nice and equal on both sides.

I've got 13.50X30X15 ET Streets on my Regal but the frame has been notched and inside frame rails maybe? moved over some. Sure do like those 30" tall tires, they do hook or at least they did with a BBC motor. Can't wait to see what this BBB motors torque will do to them.

    Looks Good :kodak:

Thanks for the reminder on the body adjustment part, that might help as well. I will take all of this into consideration and compare to my GN buddy and his set up.
