Actually what happens is the very fine road dust settles in the oil and creates a self healing film that doesnt let the metal rust.....:Brow:

Around here we don't have fine dust, we have road chunks that go "pling" or "thunk" when they hit the undercarraige. It's amazing the amount of former street you pull out of the chassis when you climb under the car.

Glad to hear that you are gonna keep and restore your 'BOAT". I love mine nothing like pulling up to your local cruise in and watch the heads turn when something other then the USUALS (mustangs, cameros, and chevelles) pulls in. Not knocking them but its just something about being able to put the whole family in the car (at one time) and go for a cruise.

Restore is a bit of an overstatement. I'm on a budget so it'll be alot of junkyard parts and aftermarket drivetrain stuff. I would love to do a real restoration but that's not even close to in the budget. The body will get restored since it's just a matter of patching a couple holes and then replacing the roof, but the interior has to be completely replaced and nobody has NOS door panels.

It should be interesting to see how long it takes. I'm already over budget and I haven't even put anything on the car yet other than a breather, oil cap, locks, and a few bulbs

I truely understand but ITS YOURS and as time goes own u will love it even more. Mine started as just a ride around with the top down but has since grown into much more. Enjoy:TU:

If I don't get the vinyl off and the roof patched soon then I'll be driving an open top car by next summer

Heres a mod done to a boat I bet no one has heard before. I had my bench seat moved BACK because I needed more leg room

I'd like mine to move down so that the steering wheel isn't in my way on enter/exit. Appearently that is the only part of the power track that doesn't work anymore on mine.

There is an odd old buck near me that has an early 50's Hudson Super Wasp that came out of NJ somewhere. Never even knew there was such a thing. Dull thin original paint, surface rust popping through but super solid and under the hood sits a SBC. This dude oils the whole car! He must dump oil on it and wipe it down. The car smells like an oil change bay when you walk up to it. Only thing is when it rains I guess the ground must be rainbow colored and I have visions of DEP helicopters flying overhead and emergency response putting booms around it to stop contaminated runoff water from entering the storm drains! He said he'll never sell it and he will never repaint it. Swear to God this is true! Nice old buck though!

I'm a great one at getting off topic, but this is by far the furthest and fastest off topic jump I've ever seen

    Good job

66electrafied Just tossing in my nickel's worth

First the blood curdling screams in an exploding Buick as the driver of the car in front chucks a butt out of the window and now this...Talk about bad visuals...Can't stop laughing!

The oil on the chassis trick was used in Europe right after the war; my dad used to keep a '51 Mercedes from rusting away on him using that same method. It only got to be trickier when the car got heavier, that little 1.7 litre flathead 4 was never known as a racing engine, and anything more than a few pounds would tax it beyond its capabilities...

My first car did the oiling trick by itself. It was a 1970 Chevelle with a very leaky six. Everything I tried to seal up that motor failed miserably. It always had a fresh coat of oil under it, and so did my shoes as oil leaked inside down through the throttle cable. So I just left it; and the car never rusted away. The underside was as clean as a whistle when they finally crushed it. The last pair of oil soaked shoes that I left in the trunk were still pliable and useable too, and that was after 10 years of sitting in the wrecker.
