The 4 original shift knobs from consolette cars I have owned (and 1 from a 1970 Stage 1 4 speed) have been semi-flat black knobs... :Do No:. From what I'm told, you can 'dull' the gloss ones w/ a fine steel wool or scuff pad...

Here's a picture of the original shifter ball from my 73 GS. Athough it carries a different number, it is a polished ball. If it were satin black from the factory and hand polished over the years, it wouldn't be so uniformly polished. I believe the bottom by the threaded hole would show some of the factory satin. as you can see, its all polished. Even inside by the brass insert. So in my opinion, Dave's black balls are correct.

Dave, were you able to get any more black shifter balls produced? My 71 is almost ready for the road and I'd like to get one.
Where is the best place to get the jam nut?
    thanks!

IIRC (been a while), the NOS ones I've had in the past were more more of a dull finish, but that could be b/c they are NOS and not necessarily correct. I just bought an original (according to the seller came off a low mi. '70) and it's glossier than I remember the NOS being (I'm surprised he replaced it its so nice).

I bought a couple from Thornton for my 2 non-consolette cars, and they looked right (dull finish, which I thought was correct) until I installed one and went to grab it and immediately realized the diameter is larger than a Buick knob. The supposed original one on the right is 1-7/8" and the Thornton repro is 2-1/8".

I'd take a consolette version if Dave (@copperheadgs1) made another run and another non-consolette one or two if a run of those could also be made.

If anyone is interested in my Thronton repros, I'd sell them for $12 ea. plus the ride.

Maybe they have something different for the consolette cars. These were a link someone provided to me. Honestly, IIRC & I don't want to put down Thornton's here - I think I just pulled the trigger w/o looking into whether they were the correct diameter and by the time I went to install one, it was too late to return them.

I've had several 4-sp. GS's and the larger one actually has a very nice feel to it, but I'd rather it be the correct diameter.

You need one with shift pattern as you have no console I believe.

I am working on getting these real soon. Mine will be correct diameter and shiny black which I think is correct. I will look into correct pattern type as well. They are more expensive however.

Remember stock Buick/Olds shifter is 3/8” fine thread. Chevy/Pontiac and aftermarket could be different.
