NEW Member Probation?

I consider myself a NEW member as I have only been here for a little over a year. I am so glad I found this website, dedicated to the Buick Family. I have made a good friend and fellow go-fast nut, right here in my home state through the website and have learned alot from reading threads that relate to my build.
My biggest gripe would have to be New members that join for one reason and one reason only, to sell what ever part they pulled out of the junkyard for as much as they can get for it. They spend the time to set up an account , leaving their name and location absent from the profile .
If I had a dollar for every time a longtime member/contributor or moderator said" Please include name and location in signature" I would be done my 70 Skylark build. Then they post in the first section in the forum they come across, News and Announcements! Really? Scroll not work on your mouse?, seemed to navigate fine to the registration section.
As a new-ish member , I made it a point to learn the rules before posting, and before I bought or sold an item in the FOR SALE section of the forums. (That is where you list items FOR SALE!, BTW) If you can`t make an attempt to do the same, perhaps ebay or craiglist is a better venue for you. I strongly suggest members stay away from dealing with any members who cannot provide their name and location and whose posts are limited to the selling of items.
I would like to see a probationary period for new members, perhaps prohibiting them from selling items for 3 months and/or requiring a contribution to the board to sell items. Unfortunately , this will put more of a workload on our website tech guy and the moderators, who all have lives and contribute selflessly already.
I suppose all one can do is avoid trouble by staying away from less than "solid" members/contributors and deal only with those that have a proven background with the website.

Well said Jim, I think it should be a requirement to list where you live. Doesn't have to be an address, but should list the nearest town and state.

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Would you suggest new members can't buy cars and/or parts for 3 months also? Just asking.

Good intentions are behind your message but it goes beyond what the mods can reasonably be expected do.:Smarty:

I too am a newish member. I do not have a problem with anything you said Jim. I have often wondered why one would not post name and location. Unless your parents named you a provocative name (i.e., Adolph Hitler: I am serious last year there was a couple who wanted to name there son that. Thank God the court intervened.) I can not think of any reason one would not list there location. I proud of where I live and I have lived in many locations. It would be like not routing for the "home team." I think this site is a God send. I have learned so much from the members here. I sold a few items and bought some too. I had some good laughs too. Before I joined, I looked at a lot of different "Buick forums." They all seem worth while. But this is the first and only forum I have ever joined. Last but not least, I wish I knew why people do not read and follow the rules. Maybe that is just the G.I. in me.

10 posts before I can show a picture of my car? Lol.... And where do I put my location? Lol

I honesty joined intending to find Canadian owners of '66 Rivieras.... Mostly because I need some parts, and they don't grow on trees here in Saskatchewan! Lol... Ebay parts search made me confused about cross over years for interior and exterior, and I have no experience with the nailhead... I will certainly need some help, and am sure to find it here.... I won't be able to offer much help though, unless someone needs help with artwork! Lol

    Gentlemen and Ladies,
My post was more of a rant session than an actual suggestion, stemming from frustration caused by the seasonal influx of "for sale only" members. Suppose I made the New member mistake by posting in the tips section, perhaps suggestion section or the bench would have been more accurate. Apologies.
I "suggest" a probationary period, but immediately (same sentence) spoke of it being impractical. I made no mention of a restriction on Buying,
Caveat emptor my Buick Brethren. After all , in the end , common sense should prevail. Deal with whom you choose.

    Agreed Jim.

    Heather,
Welcome to V8Buick.com, If you make a post in Wet Behind the Ears section of forums, and mention your 66 and intentions, I`m sure you will get some answers to your questions. Luckily the advantages and good aspects of this website far outweigh any thing that irks me! Jim/Rott

    Heather,

Wow, you have talent! I really like the paintings of the bikes and cars. Not only are they beautiful but the attention to detail, particularly the bikes, is out of this world. Thanks for sharing your art work with us. Best of luck with your boattail.

Thanks! I am just getting started in the art world! Appreciate the compliments :)

I am going to figure out how to make a signature, and then post three more times so I can get some pictures of my car up here! I am a very excited girl to own the car, and look forward to fixing it up and driving it :)

I am currently reading 10,000 threads on carpet installation, as that is what I am doing first. Mine is really badly mouse damaged :(
