Had to remove the timing cover last night, the new timing cover gasket set came with a small piece of cork gasket for the area the timing cover contacts the oil pan... but the oil pan gasket is a single piece.... so what is this thing for?

Do I have to replace the whole pan gasket anytime the timing cover is removed? or can I get away with splicing in the gasket that came with the timing cover gasket set?

One more thing... The gasket set also came with a new crank seal, is that something that should also be replaced while I'm in there? the old one only has about 1000 miles on it.
    Thanks in advance

If the front seal wasn't leaking leave it alone,..if the pan gasket by some chance stayed on the pan in one piece leave it alone just dry it best you can and a thin coat of sealer with a dab in each corner. If it tore which I'm sure it did cut with a razor there where it meets the block apply a small bead in each corner, lay gasket over that bead then put another thin bead on The gasket in each corner.

I myself put a very thin bead on both sides of the gasket then once you tighten it all up take the excess and smear it into the pan/cover gap

Same thing I do, even though never worked on sbb, only bbb. And if I do t heaven enough outside I add extra to make like a external seal as well
