Several years ago I made a decision that going forward I was not going to buy any more project cars( getting too old to work on them). Having said that, I guess I’m going to have to eat my words because recently a project car found me that I could not resist buying. It is a 72 GS Stage 1. Silver mist w/ Black vinyl top[. It is basically a stripper model with only a couple of options, AM radio, soft-ray tinted windshield, standard whitewall tires(G78-14), bumper strips, convenience group lights(trunk, glove compartment, ash tray light, mirror map light, tach & gauges, bench seat, plain steering wheel. Part of what attracted me to this car was the fact that it is numbers matching with the exception of the distributor. There is one part on it that goes against what is supposed to be correct and that is the carburetor. The carburetor part number is 7042243 which is supposed to be for a 4 speed non stage engine. However there are numerous examples of 72 Stage1’s that came equipped with this carburetor. A search on v8buick shows several threads with original cars that came with this carburetor. The big plus is that it is 1 of 101 factory 4 speed Stage 1’s produced for 1972. It is a Flint built car. I have the Sloan documentation for it. It was sold new in the Fort Wayne area of Indiana. Previous owner had owned it since 1975. Was parked in the mid 80’s due to a spun bearing. It is a project with the usual rust issues, bottom of front fenders, trunk, quarters behind the rear wheels. My original plan is to get the engine rebuilt and make it a running driving car(similar to Jason Cooks 70 GS 455 car). After that I’ll decide what the next step will be. Attached are several pictures of it.
Nice! Looks like the big brother of my GS. Originally Silver with black top. Original owner painted it stratomist blue around 1985. Wish I had the funds to pry her from your hands
Man I really dig that combo.........Several Q's....was the engine #'s on the passenger side? And would you like a shot at a super rare Carb #7042942 MF 175 for the car?
Great find Larry. Not a car to pass up so I get you breaking your pledge. Looking forward to your build.
Man, that is a cool car Larry! Congrats!!! Look how much of a greenish tint the silver 1972 year model has in it compared to a 1970 model. I would bet that is the carb that was on it from the factory so I wouldn't waste the $ on a 242 carb. BTW - the build sheet for my 72 Stage 1 was under the carpet/padding on the drivers side floor pan. Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Another proof that those who claim there are no more 'finds' out there are full of crap. Congratulations!
Great find, Larry! At first glance, I thought it might have been the car Ron Wilson bought a few years back and actually floated selling for a bit. I chased that car for a good year. I've always been partial to the allure of the 1 of 101 - especially a stripper - and would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit jealous. Looking forward to the progress!
Yes, the engine #'s are on the passenger side. I'm going to pass on the carb. I believe it has the original factory installed carb on it now.
