I had a similar situation yesterday. I was loading a `69 Chevelle onto the trailer with a friend guiding me. I didn't ask him to, he just happened to show up and want to help. I always cringe when that happens :) Anyway, he got me too far onto the trailer and when I put it in reverse to back up it was locked up, like it was in 2 gears. I pushed in the clutch and coasted back off the trailer and ran it back into the shop on the lift. The bolt that holds the 1st gear linkage arm had come loose and the arm backed away from the slot but the trans was still in 1st. Easy fix and the car was back on the trailer in minutes. I hope your problem is as easy as mine was.

I had something similar happen with my '69 SS396 Chevelle. I drove it to work one morning and when I went to back out of the parking space that afternoon it wouldn't move. The transmission was locked up. I had it towed home and when I crawled under it, I saw that the pin, washer & cotter pin was missing from the first gear linkage. I bought a Hurst "Pit Pack" at the local auto parts store and had it fixed in five minutes. It was still in first when I put it in reverse just like yours.

Yeah... Im going out in a bit to investigate. Hopefully something similar! Had 3-4 and reverse but no 1-2. That was the first time I heard a BBB screamin' at probably 8K. Forged rods, pistons and a perfect balance job to the rescue!

Got home, 3 blocks away and made the turn on the street with zero power steering as well, so we limped around back to the shop in 3rd with Armstrong steering, and steam coming outa the radiator cap overflow. PS belt was hanging on the lower pulley but the water pumper belt was gone. Told Pat we'd go find it. "Where ya gonna look?" says she.

Right at the end of the first gear burn-out of course. The cheezy belt (cogged style not recommended) with a 100A alternator had split at the bias splice joint. At least I have the number LOL...Dont know if was purely a belt failure, too many RPM, or whatever, but we'll just blame it on the chinaman anyway. ws

I used to have that issue with mine so I swapped on deep groove pulleys on the alternator and PS pump. End of problem.

Geez' Bill, I watched that video last night, but because I'm deaf I couldn't figure what was going on. lol I watched it 3 times, and the only thing I could see was that a crappy van passed you twice. Well...truth is I couldn't take my eyes off your girlfriend. Does she have a name and backstory?

So after some investigating, I found something Ive never seen before. Any leads on a HURST supplier (Hurst brand... the good stuff please!!) are appreciated. I cant quite say that the rod was broken and repaired, rather the faces are flat and looks like it was modified for whatever reason. There plenty of adjustment on these, but the crappy weld broke. I had these off, cleaned and painted and didnt notice the repair. As least the a$$hole ground it down real nice LOL...

The girl??? I cant divulge her name, but she likes to go fast in race cars; it makes her wanna take her clothes off and get, well, kin..... They all have their weird side ya know? The one in the '72 likes to play "Nurse"... Blondes!! So back to my rod... ws

Pete Serio is the Hurst guru, he wrote the book(s). He's a GTO guy, I'll see if I can find the info. Thanks for the pix! "Me so horny, now" I'll have to call my friend Bob Kraft and see where he goes.

Here's a link, he's a Pontiac guy but has tons of Hurst stuff and knowledge. I used him years ago. Isn't there a number on the rod? I have one of the books, but it's at my summer house.

You pahtee long time... The number on the rod is 5298 07. Its 3/8" X 12 and the arm on the trans is XXX 141.
It looks like both pieces have been welded to suit. The XXX on the arm has been welded over and obliterated. Ive seen a few 5298's on edog but they all call out 7/16" dia. The trans is a Super T-10 that a guy bought as a spare for a Chevelle. It came with the shifter on it, yet it also had the bearing guide on the snout that was a Ford size. Im half tempted to just buy the 3 rod set with new bushings and all the BS for about 90.00 from a Hurst Dealer on the "eDog". Thoughts??

So to complicate matters more, Im wondering if the PO pieced together some COMP+ stuff with some Super Shifter parts. All the Muncie and T-10 arms are straight as per the screen shot off of Bozo, and my arm has definitely been mod'd as per the pic. Ideas from any one is great!

Even as a repair to the break, the other bend shown looks like a fix as well. Now theres a case of Plausible FAILURE Deniability.. ws

That's what I was afraid of, a hybrid. Maybe heated and bent/weakened. I can't help at all. If it were me, I'd just grab the girl and get rid of the car while it's shiny. Clearly, the car is cursed.

Probably best to just buy a new linkage kit for a Super T-10 and be done with it.

Got a NOS Hurst shifter rod yesterday from Staten Island for 20.00 + 5.00 for the envelope It may need a little fudging but should work.

Still on the prowl for trim clips for the '64 Special. Lo and behold while out junking I found a 66 or a 67 4 door sedan Special. The trim is SS instead of aluminum (dang it!) but the stupid clips are identical to what I need. That 50 Y.O. nylon stuff is pretty brittle but I managed to save 12 pcs. I had one of mine in hand and the fit was good.

Also found a glove box door and latch from a sport wagon for Stevie Ray Reynolds. Yeah... I pay it forward differently than brozilla would like to see. Awww! Guys better hurry... trees are greening, grass is weeding and snakes are slithering! ws

That's a '66 Bill, lucky to find something you could use from it out there. Nice going! How many more clips do you need?

I think I counted 38 holes, have 12 from today and maybe 20 originals to the car and a few spring steel wire types (wrong, but work) , so maybe 10-15 in case some bust. Im really liking that 66 trim. Its more of a V shape with the 64 having a weird art deco profile, and in aluminum. Any thoughts? Even a complete trim swap over isnt out of the question. I like that stainless stuff!

Looked at bunches of steering wheels that were all gonners, and a guy from 65GS was looking for nailhead stuff; all gone too--- picked clean in the last year! ws
