Not sure what the little screened part of this oil filter plate is for but this one doesn't allow anything through it. What's it's purpose?

The main purpose is to by-pass a clogged oil filter so that the engine does NOT run out of oil. What it also does is when your foot is to the floor many oil filters don't have the volume nec. ( because of the filtering media) to supply the engine with the volume of oil needed at WOT & higher RPM's. So it by-passes the filter directly into the engine unfiltered. One reason racing oil filters are so much more expensive normally than what is normally found on the shelf.

Thanks for that info, Tom. I tried compressed air (125#) on it from the filter side and couldn't get anything through it. Do you think it is still 'functional'?

You should be able to move the little disc in the middle with your finger. It has a very light spring behind it.

Okay, got it to move. Thought that it had a screen in front of it that I didn't want to damage but with enough pressure the whole thing popped open. Thanks again.
