Am I ok to fit Wix oil filter pt no 51258 to 1975 350 engine? The filter currently fitted is a Purolator L25288. The canistor on the new Wix filter is a lot larger diameter than the Purolator type.

Thanks for the cross ref .the purolator L25288 does not appear so probably not the right filter to fit .Yet other sources say the Wix 51258 is correct for the 350 engine I'm confused.

Why are you confused? You have the wrong Purolator filter on there. The Wix 51258 fits every Buick 350 and 455 made, and other Buick engines, 62-78. Who put that Purolator filter on there?

Probably couldn't get the right filter at the time and just put whatever fit.

DEADMANSCURVE my first word : truck

my carquest numbers ( just different prefix ) - #85258 ( longer version #85049 ) , #85522 ( supercedes from the #L25288 ) all have 13/16-16" threads and if the gasket is same ok . I think I have run into that before when looking up filters and customer is trying to match the old filter # .

Thanks for the information there's so many manufacturers and cross references it's hard to tie it down unless you are familiar and here in England there aren't any Buick people that I know of .Thanks again.

While lots of filters will fit, the right one is the AC Delco PF-24, the Wix 51258 is the direct crossover.

I’ve been using the Napa 1522, surprised to find out it is not the correct filter. But it fits and works ok.

I've been using an AC PF42 or 47 cant quite remember.
    It works fine.
My thoughts are as long as its not a Fram, the threads are correct, gasket is the same, and the oil goes in, then out thru the center, your good.

Some filters may look the same on the outside, only difference being internally, they may not have the anti-drainback valve. I would make sure to use the one that has that valve.

Just about any filter you use will have an anti drain back valve. Some are made out of better materials though.
