  1. STAGE III

STAGE III Lost Experimental 455-4 Bolt Main Block.

    Hi Guys,

I have been so obsessed with my new 4 speed Wildcat and these blasted health problems :)af: ) I think I forgot to even respond to "smallhurst's" (Rusty's) pm request for info on the Hurst Olds.

Sorry about that Rusty (I'll blame it on the pain pills because you know I rarely let a chance get by me to talk cars ha ha ).

Anyhow the 69 H/O sold on ebay a few weeks ago.I got a very fair price for it even with all the advertised needed repairs and painting issue's.

The buyer already has it and is VERY happy with everything he got and most importantly his wife likes it too!Lucky guy:TU:

He graduated in 1968 and wanted something cool, and fast, from that era, and I believe he's got it.

Hopefully he will give his classmates a little "power show" in the parking lot at the next reunion in 2008:eek2:

I still have my 60 convertible 225 and now the 64 factory 4 speed Wildcat to help keep my mind off the Hurst although I KNOW the need for speed will eventually win me over and the Wildcat and I will part company (yep, only had it 2 weeks and I still know I will HAVE to have another GS:Dou: ).

    A 401 4 speed is cool, but it's hard to forget 510ft lbs. of torque at 2800 rpms:shock: .

No replacement for displacement ya know.

Well, here is one of the last shots of the Olds at the end of my property as the 2 car transport prepped to load her up.
Sorry if the picture is blurry (probably the mist from the tears:ball:  ).

I'm just glad someone with the money to fix it got it.

Just like the Stage III 4 bolt block I eventually sold, I REFUSE to keep anything no matter how cool if I cannot do it right, and take care of it.
My goal is as I sell off these items and hopefully save some money, I'll keep saving up till I can buy my dream car.

An 1970 Apollo White GSX (hopefully with a 4 speed, in a perfect world:) ).

That's about it, still on the look out for a reasonable "Fo Fo two" if the opportunity presents itself. The goal other than getting a GSX in the end, is to own, and experience, as many cool and different rides as possible on the "trip".

One of those "Long strange trips" (Grateful Dead) I guess, just as long as I can look back on it all with a smile that's cool with me, and then one day I can REALLY harass the grand babies (God willing:TU: ) with all these old car stories.

Yes, a captive audience, can't wait heh heh

    H/O to GO

    WOW ! That was blurry!

Try this one standing on the dually and looking down.

Cool old car, I'll miss it but at least I had a little time with one and that's better than nothing for me.

I think that is one of my dream cars, John....bummer you had to sell it!

  4. STAGE III

STAGE III Lost Experimental 455-4 Bolt Main Block.

I hear ya.Problem was it sat here for 2 years without benefit of a garage (car won't fit in the barn behind it,due to the design and a "few" of my things) and all my money was tied up in it to the point it became nothing but a bummer.

I knew it was only going down hill, and I also knew I didn't have the money to stop or reverse the process.

Last thing I wanted was to be one of those "NOPE, won't sell it sonny, cuz I'm a fixin to slick that thar car all up one of these here dayz, YEP, thats whatta I'm a gonna do (interject a loud rasping cough, and a definitive spit, and a shirt sleeve wipe at this point, then suck teeth and just STARE).

No, the Hurst is now sitting in a heated garage in Colorado with a man who builds bridges for a living, and when he retires it will get his full and deserved attention and that makes me feel real good.

It should never experience the conditions it used to "suffer" when I first found it in these pictures.

She's saved and has a good home.Mission accomplished

:TU: And Johnny got a 4 speed Wildcat as a added reward!

    My favorite year!

Can't tell from the pic, but is it black? I always wondered what a reversed Hurst (hey that's catchy!:Brow: ) would look like in black with a silver or better yet gold stripes and deck lid.
    Nice car.

Yes Dave, its black on black, BTW how would I measure the 442 emblems to find out if I can use the band-aid stripes, it sure would look bad-ass with red stripes

    Band aid stripes

On the W30 cars that had the Band aid stripes, the 442 numerals were moved rearward and upward so the stripe would be totally behind the sculpturing at the rear edge of the wheel well. This stripe only was available and came as part of the W30 package originally. I believe it was known as a W36 stripe, but you couldn't order it as a stand alone option on a non W30 car. 442's came standard with the Y70 narrow stripe that bordered the stainless molding on the convertibles from front to rear and on coupes and hardtops, followed the quarter glass opening around the C pillar and along the drip rail to the front near the windshield. That stripe was omitted on the W30 cars.

As long as you're not trying to pass off the car as original, the easiest way is to center the normal stripes on the emblems where they are and don't worry about the interference with the wheel well opening. I would suggest mocking this up with some colored paper and tape before you do it, though.

To do it right, requires welding up the holes for the current position and drilling new ones in the correct locations (take measurements off an original car or there may be some accurate templates available now).

I think you can buy the stripe kits which gives you the exact dims for the stripes and spacing between the main stripe and the numerals, and the main stripe and the outer stripes. I may have that info somewhere, but all my stuff's still boxed up from the move.

There's probably more 68 442's out there with this bandaid stripe now than was ever built in 1968. Personally I like the Hurst stripe/trunk treatment better, but different strokes.............. :)

Thanks Dave! By no means would I try to pass my car off as a W-30 or something like that, its no longer orginal anyway being I don't even have the original rngine anymore, I just like the look of the band-aid stripe, I do wanna get something eventually that I can keep as a #s matching car........................hopefully someday I can do F.A.S.T :Brow:

John Fritz, is this your Wildcat?

Someone posted this on ROP, is this your car, Stage III? I love it! Wierd shifter, but I guess it works. Looks like an emergency brake lever on a sports car.

Always wanted to do a 1963/64 Olds Starfire with a 4 speed. Don't think they ever made one, but I've seen 88's with 3 on the tree (as well as 65 and 66's with 4 speeds)

Day late and dollar short, Dan. My close friend here just sold a complete, running 67 he brought back from Oklahoma last month. It was in primer, ready for finish paint and all there with no rust. Will keep my eyes and ears open for another.

Bob Kanas has one here in Detroit

One of the regulars at the Pure Stock Drag Race at Stanton is Bob Kanas (sp?). His car is that antique pewter grey 67 442 post with a 4 speed. Very nice car, but I doubt he'd part with it. I think there's pics of it on the websites for the Pure Stock from previous years. You never know................

I flipped a 67 Cutlass Supreme years ago that I painted that color with a black vinyl top. Much sharper than the original red/black. Also has a nice 72 Supreme with a factory 455 in that combination. Sharp.

I stumbled across this thread from a couple of years ago so thought I would revive it with a post. I just bought a 67 442 - 4 speed which I don't have in my possession yet, but here's a picture of it anyway. Rick H. should have it to me in the next week or so, I hope! Thanks to Mark (lob87we4)and Bruce (68 lesablre 4 dr) for checking it out and picking the car up for me!
