Just saw my name mentioned, been real busy lately. Guy, Drum brake spindles were coded with bright yellow paint on the backside, disc spindles were green. Cool pics here, and one thing I wanted to mention. I bought a 70 Yellow GSX out of California years ago that still had the factory exhaust pipes. The car still had the original date coded mufflers, exhaust hangers etc. Anyway the thing I remember was the tailpipes still had the aluminized or zinc plated coating on them. I remember thinking I could easily clean them up a little and re-use them for Concours. I don't remember if the front pipes had the same plating or not. I would have to check over the pics/notes some time. The car was so virgin underneath I used to clean off the dirt and let Kleiner know what the paint dabs/plating was on the parts he asked me to look at. That car sure spoiled me. I truely wish all my cars had been driven in the desert for the majority of their lives like that one. Duane
Duane, sounds like a cool car. Funny you mention the exhaust. An old 70 magazine I have shows a GS 350 with the rear pipes having some black paint on them like the assembly says to do. Not neat either. I could not bring myself to do it. Check it out.
I bet your right Herb. Eric & crew do some great work. I happen to have Tom & Eric's 440-6 Pack Super bee in the shop right now! Nice car for a Mopar:Smarty:
I saw this thread and had a question. I just started disassembling my GSX and have been documenting some things for the restoration. I found orange on the front spindle (see pic). you don't mention this color. The ball joints are original(riveted) never changed so I assume spindle is also. Any comments are appreciated. I only want to do this once and correct. Thanks Lenny
The original head pipes also had an aluminized plating on my 70 GS455 conv. along with the tailpipes. I changed the system out a few years ago due to the head pipes were flattened and scraped through due to road rash over the years. I saved the original mufflers. I'll be beginning a restoration on the conv. this winter and then the GSX and it will be interesting to compare the two with what you're finding. Thanks Dave/Herb for the documentation.
"I saw this thread and had a question. I just started disassembling my GSX and have been documenting some things for the restoration. I found orange on the front spindle (see pic). you don't mention this color." The orange on the front of the spindle was supposed to stand for "Heavy Duty Use". I don't know what would have been different between regular use and HD use, but that's what I was told. Duane PS. I don't mention lots of things, like copper or copper plated cotter pins on certain year Flint cars, or how some were smacked home by a machine, while others were installed by hand. There are other threads on here about undercarriages. I believe Ken Lisk started one when he was re-doing his 71 GSX. Although not all the info on that thread may be accurate, there is sure a ton of info there. Check out the thread "Firewall Forward Finishes and Markings- Part Deux"
I have not found orange on any disc brake cars. I just find green with a pink dot. That is interesting.
