Ya cant. For the folks who like to argue that minimum wage jobs are for highschool kids and not a career choice don't realize the implications of their statements. Life would be much tougher if the minimum wage jobs were only open after school hours and on the weekends. No banks, grocery stores, no stores of any kind really. These jobs need done as the rest of the working world depends heavily on them. It ain't just McDonald's.

No, I don't need 15 minutes of fame and it wasn't my intention to slow the line down  But how on earth are these people going to learn to count if you don't test them on it? It was simple math for crying out loud. Do you want someone working for you who can't count to ten without help? Most of these people are teenagers, they should have known this stuff in elementary school. Why don't they know it by now? Maybe I shouldn't have said it was hilarious. Yes, I do get a laugh out of it but in reality it's sad, even tragic that someone 17 years old can't do simple math.

Wow dude.. the kids of this world did not ask to be born..Tossed in to a over crowded class room that is supposed to have a teacher in it that is fair to all students.. WELL news to you they are not... the scum bag educators in this world does help the troubled student that always has their hand up asking for help..they the educator would much rather take the EAZY way out and just pass the kid on..

Yes it tragic simple math.. Do you know if this kid that you are picking had a quality home life? Were they a Foster kid?? were they beaten? Are they shy? NO YOU DONT.

You would rather make fun of the situation.. and get your 15 minutes,,, took me 15 minutes to write this...

FWIW. I was one of those kids that held his hand up.. I dropped out of school in the eight grade got my GED at 17 . Got a job in the sawmill .. then I got in the HVAC trade. and retired 18 yrs ago. FWIW im 58 and got a great pension. and the funny thing I cant do simple math when Im under simple pressure.

Blame the system that we built not the kid. They did not ask to be born.. dont pick on the weak. all you do is put them down and make it worse.. Yes its hard to encourage someone that keeps gettin kicked.

A while ago right outside a high school a kid that was probably 14 or 15 years old asked me if I knew the time..
I remember the time exactly as this really bothered me.. I told him it was 1/4 to 4:00 and he asked what time is that in digital numbers as that's how he only knows time..
I don't think it really his fault either not knowing old school time..

Bob, I do agree that the parents should share much of the blame for how they raised their kids.

The way cars are now the norm seems to be to just buy another car even for a simple front end damage like one bumper and a fender.

While I prefer OEM parts, aftermarket parts can look pretty good too. ;)

And as far as making change, I've found people who were not competent at it going back 40+ years. This is nothing new.

Ronnie there is far more to it than you realize. As mark said the older skilled people are moving on. I am leaving the trade next year which will be just 40yrs working hands on and teaching collision repair skills. We have been trying to get another tech for about 8 to 9 months.
Many people see what we offer in this area and want to apply with no mechanical skills. They see the dollar and say to themselves it's just a car that's easy...... not for most.
Hugger and a few others know what I'm saying.
Way to much liability in the industry to take on many that apply.
Most applicant's have very little pride in themselves and it shows in the first day of their work.
As for replacing cars half the time the insurance company makes the decision. The other half the owner does not want a car that has been damaged. I see this as a more regional issue as to owners choice.

A couple of the guys that I worked with at a Chevy dealer that closed both went to a different Chevy dealer. The dealer wanted to expand so they built a large addition and planned to hire four new technicians. They only had four people apply. Two had no experience as flat rate technicians and wanted to be paid the at the flat rate pay, but be paid hourly. The other two were qualified, but failed the drug test. They finally promoted a lube tech to apprentice mechanic and hired a new lube tech.

I did the first oil change on my (recently purchased) ‘17 Durango R/T last weekend and the Mopar filter that came off had a sticker for the dealer on it, saying ‘We’re Hiring Techs! Call Us!’ with the phone number. I thought it was pretty smart, but maybe it’s desperation, too.

While I agree middle class has generally eroded into working class, my point was they at least have an opportunity in this economy. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but around here, $15 an hour with benefits is the new minimum wage. Have a room mate or spouse doing the same thing, and making a living isn't an issue.

I think too many people these days think ‘living wage’ should mean ‘living by myself in a nice house or apartment with new appliances, laptop, cable tv, internet, Starbucks, expensive beer, takeout or eat out food, a car payment and a jet-ski/motorcycle/atv/toy with no overtime and lots of off time’ and don’t realize their parents didn’t live that way to start out, either. It’s not just the millennials who think this-a lot of the folks who lost their asses in the housing meltdown were way overextended on Ninja loans, interest only mortgages, zero down/no equity/ARMs, too. Just because some people have ‘stuff’ doesn’t mean you deserve it, nor should you go into obscene debt to get it. Nor demand the government mandate you have it.

Obviously you have never been a public school teacher. I have. 23 years. The above is an ignorant statement. I hate having to make this post. I do not like slamming a Buick brother, but you are dead wrong.

Yeah maybe, maybe not. I got out of prison in 90 at 30 yrs old, (I was a drug addict). Got married while flat broke and a min wage job.(painter) 5.25 an hour. Got a second job managing an apt building and doing maint. for 300.00 a month about the time my first child was born. Bought my fist home as a fixer upper for my lifes savings of 3000.00 and 525.00 a month payments. In 92. was riding a bicycle with my tools in a basket. Worked my way up from one position to another getting a bit more pay with each job change. by 1998 I was making 13.00 hr as a HVAC helper. Still learning the trades. 2002 I sold that house when the neighborhood redeveloped and all the yuppies wanted to move in and made a good profit. (250K) Bought land in the boonies of N fl. Built a home and opened my own HVAC company. I earned every thing I have. No one has given me nothing. My current mtg payment is 1250.00 a month. + 5000.00 a yr out of pocket for tax and ins. If I want another Buick I find a way to earn the money and buy one part at a time. By starting out at min wage(5.25 hr) way less that the 10-12.00 were talking about Id not have learned the drive to go for and get what I have. I currently have the business and 2 side gigs. Buy and flip cars n trucks and the Ebay store which many of you guys have bought stuff from (thanks!) So ya still think Im out of touch? Oh and BTW I was born in Dearborn and grew up in Allen Park in the 60's - 70's

It's not the wages being paid that is the problem. The problem is Government is destroying capitalism along with supply & demand in business.
Since 1985 insurance premiums have gone up 1000%, rent 400%, vehicles 300%, fuel 100%, utilities 100%.
In 1985 it cost $10/month for cable and $18/month for a land line phone, you did not have a cell phone or computer.
Today cable is a minimum $100/month with internet and a cell phone is $50-$75/month.
In 1985 minimum wage was $3.35/hour and today it is $7.25-$12.00/hour.
Now add in what business/corporations pays in bureaucratic overhead expenses in 2019 compared to 1985 (government is running them out of business).

The problem is our political leaders have been trying to raise the standard of living in underdeveloped countries with our money and the reality to that is our standard of living will only be lowered to theirs; that's what a global economy does.
The dictators of those third world countries basically have slave labor and we can't compete with that.
