With a whole LOT of modification to the wheel lip area. Ended up cutting the lip area off another wasted body and splicing the lip to the 'un-lipped' Chevelle wheel house. They DO at least line up on the inner to outer flange... as long as it is coupe to coupe. Convertible requires even more modification...
I know they make buick wheel houses but they are way too expensive for me right now, i just need the outer lip for the quarters to attach to
take a piece of 1in wide sheet bend it to fit the lip of the skin then tack it in place, then build out to that piece. You can get a few areas off the chevelle piece to work but it is quite different
When I built the X-Camino I had to fabricate the lip on the outer wheel houses to go between the Chevy outer wheel houses and the Buick Quarter Panels. What I ended up doing was fabricating 4-5 small pieces on each side. I would make a piece, clamp it on the quarter, then form/make another section and tack weld the 2 pieces together. Then I took the pieces off the car, finished welding them together, put them back on the car and formed the next piece. I did this until the entire lip was made. I then took the finished lip off the car and drilled holes in the quarter panel where I was going to mig weld it to the lip. I then clamped the hand formed lip back in place and welded it solid to the outer wheel house. At that point I unclamped everything so the parts were under no tension, and after everything was cooled, I welded the outer lip to the quarter panel. This method will alleviate any stresses on the quarter panel, so it will not get distorted. I also supported the car with jack stands under the rear axle, so the panels were going to be supported exactly like they would be when the car was on the ground. This took a LONG time to do, but it turned out beautifully, and still looks good after 20 years. Duane
Well then i better get started on making those pieces then lol, where would you cut out the lip on the outer wheel houses because i know they get close to the body/ quarters right around there
What are you planning to do use the Chevelle outers and then make your own lips, or are you starting with the original outers and repairing them? Duane
You want to only remove what's rotten, post a couple pics of what you working with, you can make the lip in one piece, just bend it to fit the contours of the 1/4. Then you can clamp the 1/4 in place and from the inside build your way out to the new lip
Starting with the originals and repair the lip on both wheel house and quarter. i will post pics of both sides of the car tomorrow
The outer wheel houses from the parts place are pretty darn nice. I think I’d rather spend $160 each and end up with a solid repair, than to cobble together a bunch of pieces of metal that may or may not work out well.
