We staying in North Fort Myers until the 30th. Looking outside the window, I watch this critter and photographed it. A few minutes earlier, (no picture) my wife witnessed that gator snatch a duck from the water surface - end of duck. IMG_4542_1.jpg

A friend of mine sent this recently when he was golfing. A gator came out of the weeds on a golf course in Jupiter, FL to have a turtle for lunch.

Is that brackish water? This past May I stayed just outside Marco Island and saw gators almost everyday, just outside the lanai back door! I'd watch them swim over from the Mangroves across the water. This was a baby.

Did u hear on the news that a lady was fined by a judge here in Florida, $50000+ for feeding gators & other wildlife. Against the law to feed any wild animal!

I kayak alot and often go past alligators in Dona bay beside my house and the intercoastal waterways, but especially run into them on the Myakka river. Still get a little nervous around the big ones on Myakka. I probably would become an olympic speed kayaker if I saw a 17 ft saltwater croc. Sharks make me nervous also out on the Gulf in the kayak, they can be downright nosey

An American Alligator is unusual because it is protected under the endangered species act, yet in Florida there is also a hunting season. The Alligator was hunted until it was close to extinction, then it was protected and has now recovered to the point that there is a hunting season for it. The reason that it is still officially on the endangered species list is that it is so similar in appearance to the American Crocodile which is still really endangered, that most people can't tell the difference between an Alligator and a Crocodile.

Back in July 2000,we got married and headed south for a honeymoon. I was travelling down 95 and all of the sudden all traffic was swerving around and braking. Being a northerner,I stood my ground but I also ran over a mid sized alligator or whatever the thing was.My poor lifted Tacoma made it over it,but I thought we were going to roll.It was dusk out and I pulled over to go see what I hit (thought the worst and thought it was a human) but apparently he was hit before me. Some people stopped and told me to get my ass in my truck and get out of there as they were known to be alongside the road...I got myself moving out of there pretty fast..

Why would anyone think swimming at night in Florida would be a good idea?

Here at UF to pledge for one of the frats you had to swim out into Lake Alice on campus about 10 yards and swim back in the dark. No one ever attacked but I don't think so Tim...
I work for UF and there are 8-10 footers in that lake.
