Most likely, the number signifies that the car was one of the festival cars at Indy. GM wouldv'e provided lots of vehicles for use during race week. I had a 2000 Camaro SS that saw duty at the April, 2000 race at Texas Motor Speedway. My car was number 26 out of I don't know how many that were used during the week of the race. Adam Petty rode in my car during racer introductions before the actual race. They had a sticker on the windshield so they could tell the cars apart, since they all looked exactly alike. Sounds like the #87 on this car would be something simliar.
yes ..in some cases they ran many cars at the track... but I think in 1976 it was only 1 this one or this type...only 2 built..it has the decals all the way through the froint fenders and big letter decals on the hood and aluminum hood which was raised/humped and ran the turbo V6 and front spoiler... the original car that ran the track would be worth buku money.....ours are/were replicars running with v8 350's.... and all cars were modified for the indy 500 ...the ones for sale to the public were not....BUT the only one that was not modified and all factory stock for the indy pacing and public was the 1989 Turbo trans am w/turbo v6 I had both 76 & 89 I will regret selling them.... ou: I do already...
Yes, they would have actually run only one car on the track as the actual pace car, but they would have also supplied lots of other cars for use during the week by the press, company officials, VIP's, etc. Most all of them would've had the replica decals on them, or some variation.
yes in that case.. I was refering to many running as a presentation type thing before the race .. like in 1989 I think about 100 turbo trans am did a few laps before race ....I think they refer to them as festival cars... o No:
Glen ....you know we are waiting for pics.... I imagine your going to strip and paint fresh on the pace car?
Sorry Frank, won't have pics until the car is delivered next week sometime. I'll post pics as soon as she gets home. I have to finish up my 71 GS resto first, so for now I will get the pace car roadworthy and safe to drive. It's very presentable currently so I would like to drive it and when the time comes, it will get a proper restoration.
oh...delivered ...thought you drove it home and just making us beg... ou: .................... keep your ears and eyes open and make sure them Canadians dont hijack the poor transporter of your pace car... ...your giving out to much information..dont mention any routes it may be taking....    just joking now...we know Canadians are the best..
G String The Indy wings were added before I bought the car. They come off easily as they are only glued on and I have had them off before. I have talked to some other pace car owners and we agree its not the production number on the back of the mirror. Iceman
Here is another car that just popped up in Calgary. 75 Buick Century Freespirit, t-tops, bcuket seats, needs restoration, $1500 OBO Tel: 403‑281‑6879 There's a few members in the area that might have a look at the car for a perspective buyer. Brian
Pace Car Pics The car arrived today finally. Here are some pics. The owner gave me an old roadtest out of a magazine for the 76 Pace Car and it might have solved the mystery on the numbering of the cars. In the ad it shows a brand new pace car with a special Pace Car license plate with the number 80 on it, then on the rearview mirror there is a #80 also. I'll try to scan post the paper clipping later in the week. Also, it shows the following options on the cowl tag: AR9,A31, Y43
looks great...Congrats... :TU: :TU: the paint looks ok in pictures...is it as faded as the seller was saying..?? no way to possibly buff or wet sand and buff..??
I bet you we have a few guys here :spank: :spank: themselves for hesitating on that one....one is Canadian and the other you know who... p p p btw....I picked up a pace car also today...but not buick.. the price was right and its a cream puff...
I gotta go know so i can kick my own ass about 6 or 7 times. The really bad part about this is the fact that i'll see the car all the time!!!!!!!! Tom
