Paint advice :/ ADDED NEW PHOTOS

Quotes on repainting my Non-show, driver quality only '66 Riviera are coming back betwen $10,000 and $45,000 .... Lmao. I had no idea it would be so expensive! ... I have a $10,000 budget for the entire car! ... might have to rethink my plans ....

The car had a cheap repaint of pearle white in the 90's that did not include the "innards" (the jambs, trunk and engine compartment are gunmetal grey)

....I wanted to return the car to the Gun Metal grey colour in this picture .... I would consider leaving the car white (to save money) however, I am not sure If I would be any furthur ahead .... Answer me this: Does white paint have colour match problems like any other colour? This car has been White ( and sitting outside, in the elements, uncovered, in Saskatchewan!) for over 20 years. I imagine oxidization and sun fade has had *some* effect of the paint? There is some body work to do, so if the white is unmatchable, I fear that it will necessitate a full repaint no matter what .... I dunno :( I sold classic car parts as a past career, not painted them! :)

Should I just bite the bullet and pay to have it painted the colour I want, or will I save anything by staying white?

    Tks in advance!

now that I watched my guy go through my car, i much better understand the pain staking process that goes in it. to say the least, it would not save you any money to go back to the original color.

because a good shop is still going to disassemble your car then start from there.

over this way in MA. this car cost me $5500.00 to paint and that was changing the color. although all the major bodywork was done already which save alot of money.

make it the color you want and write the check, done right, you will never regret it.

    my 2 cents

That seems a little high. You should be able to get a good paint job for around $5000.Maybe less if you do the prep work

    My 2 cents:

    1) Leave the paint for last. Time always provides more options. Plus, I assume your going to do engine work, interior work, etc. I would imagine you would not be very happy if after spending all that money on an expensive paint job and it got messed up. Time to save money. Market conditions might change.....

    2) White is the most forgiving if the body work is not 100 percent perfect. As compared to say black, which shows every flaw.

A really good paint job will cost huge money. If you only want it to last a few years, you can get by with a cheapo 5k bodywork included paint job. If you want it flawless/jambed/complete/never show through, get ready to spend a LOOOOOTe of cash.

thru my shop a solid car with little rust repair runs 8 to 15k replacing floors quarters etc is good bit more but just a same color repaint could be around 5500 to 7500 I wish I could get people to pay what its worth but they wont and whoever told you 45k is a prick with an ego prob keep in mind there will be 2k in material used also

Paint is definitely my final step, but I called around to find out what kind of prices to expect and was blown away :)

I just want to drive my car... I don't want a showroom paint job... But I don't want to be re-painting it 5 years later either ... Sigh.

Are there any VO-Tech schools in you area? They can do some good work at a minimal cost.

Heather, that is a great picture you attached! The Riviera needs to go back to that color, big time! I'd assume, from your description, the car needs completely repainted. It should be taken down to bare metal first if you want it to last, and of course, you'll have to garage it afterwards. I've seen a few people get lucky with 5k "gift" paint jobs done by folks on the side, but the norm would be to spend at least 10k for anything decent. The 2k in materials is about right, and it's a BIG car to say the least. Some close up shots of the problem areas of the Rivieras body can help us internet experts determine how close your estimates are to what we deem fair. I checked out your website and think your dog and pony artworks are the cat's meow. You must have a passion for them!

    Heather,
If you are from Saskatoon have you given E-tek Restorations a try?? I found a thread on another site by mistake and have been reading thru the thread(83 pages) and counting. But if you have some time it is excellent read and viewing for anyone. You will see some great rust and rot repairs, exceptional body work and a few great paint jobs. I believe he works at home which means he has no overhead to drive cost up for body and paint. I am not sure what he gets for paint jobs. Check out the thread below. Check out his website as well(link attached).

And if you have some more time this guy is in Pennsylvania. You will see his name in the e-tec thread

Definitely two excellent threads and well worth the time. Interesting site as well.

I have attached some :) Please share you thoughts! I feel the car is in pretty good shape considering it's age and lack of care and appropriate storage :)

    Thank you! :)

You never know until all the paints off, but it sure looks like minimal bodywork is necessary. I wouldn't even think about a partial refinish though. The car deserves to be done right! Is that a Stage 1 emblem on the grille?

90% of the cost is in the prep. I couldn't find anyone local that even wanted to touch mine. When I finally did, followed all he told me and then at the last minute, said, "You come this far, might as well paint it yourself"! So I did:grin: There's a lot of people here that have done the same thing. Lots of information out there as well. Paint supplies alone were around $1,500, including the primers and it took forever to get the car ready for paint. Found a local paint supply store that helped me out a lot. How did it turn out? Not perfect, there is some dirt in it, but you have to look really close to see it. I screwed up a panel and had to respray it, working on that now. You can see it here:

Nice work ,I see you used PPG shop line ,how did you get along with that line I mean besides the money you saved, it looks like it turned out really well for you.

I used shopline for the primers and DBC Basecoat, 2021 clear. The basecoat runs $120 quart, everytime I open the can I have a fear of spilling it:Dou:

That basecoat lays down super nice and the clear is like putting a coat of glass on it. Really good products to work with.

My wife's VW I use shopline all the way around, turned out pretty good, but the DBC is leaps and bounds better. For those that don't know, it's all PPG products. Shopline is thier budget brand, big difference in price.

It is. The emblem was all that was left of the 1971 Buick Riviera GS Stage 1 that my dad owned previous to the '66. The '71 was destroyed when a drunk driver ran a red light and T-boned it at high speed, pushing it into oncoming traffic ... Thankfully everyone was able to walk away, except the car :(

The insurance company wrote the '71 off and hauled it away to the scrap yard, Dad found the emblem on the street later, and kept it ... he loved the car, and wanted a reminder of it :)

That's why my '65 has GS hood scoops. The only parts left of my old '67 GS.
I would wait for paint until last also.Gunmetal is a great color on that body-style.:TU:

I think most people underestimate the amount of work involved in doing a "decent" paint job. I have a friend the owns a roofing company and he also owns a 66 Barracuda. I needed a new roof and he needs a paint job. I offered to paint his car for him replacing my roof. I have a 1300 sqft one level ranch house that needed a strip off and I wanted metal roofing. He laughed at me and said he would paint the car himself. 6 months later, he shows up with the Barracuda with one door the front fenders and hood stripped to metal and a lot of the trim removed. He asks me if the deal is still on. Once he got into the work involved he realized the work involved and he hadn't even scratched the surface (pun). It took him and a worker of his 2 weekends to strip my roof, replace some of the damaged wood and reroof it. About $3k in materials all together. I told him it would take me about a year on my weekends to do his car. I'm also painting the inside as well as doing some floor patch panels. His estimate to replace my roof was $10k.

My point is, most people wouldn't bark much at doing their roof for $10k ( his estimate was the lowest BTW) but when it comes to painting a car they have a real problem with parting with the cash. I used to be a roofer, it's not easy work. On the other hand, good body work is not easy either. I think my buddy is getting the better end of the deal here but I didn't have to shell out a bunch of cash either...

Funny ... I also require new shingles on my house .... Probably more important than working on my car at the moment :) lol

I think my underestimation is due to the fact that my daily driver needs a paint job (clear coat is coming off ... yuck) and I have it booked in to be painted at a local shop for $1000 ... mind you this paint shop sponsors my race car, there is no change of color involved, no body work, and I agreed to strip the car (handles, trim etc) before dropping it off.

I understand it is a big job, I just didn't think it would be quite as expensive as the quotes are coming back :)

If only I could trade artwork for paint .... but that would be a lot of artwork! ... haha
