Has anyone tried the "Pearl" vinyl dye offered by Year One (part SVM28)? If so, how closely does it match other Pearl interior components, specifically for the 1970 model year (if it makes a difference)?

    Thanks!

Nothing will match a 47 year old fabric. Prepare to do the whole area in order to make it look good.

I used Sem dyes for my interior pieces.

I do too. In order for a good result, you first need to use the cleaner and later the adhesion promoter.

Most of my interior pieces are new; however, I have a few of the original trim items that I would like to refinish. Obviously, I'd like to try to match my new parts as closely as possible. I've looked at both "Super White" and "Phantom White" from SEM, but they both seem to be a bit off when compared to my new door panels, etc. I think GM used a color called "Ivory" on some parts in conjunction with pearl white interiors, but I'm not sure if anyone still makes that color. I may give the Year One "Pearl" a try since it doesn't look as if anyone else has. If I do, I'll try to report my findings here.

SEM has a better match of white. Post the choices and I will tell you the one I used.
Edit --Must have been Phantom White but I think your expectation that a stock can color will be an exact match is misplaced. Even dye lots with the same color code can vary.

Based on personal experience with these interiors, I certainly have no such expectation. Also, I realize that I will have some trial and error (I already have with some of the SEM products) in order to find a match that is pretty close to the panels I have that are considered "Pearl" by one particular manufacturer (PUI). My original inquiry was meant to discover if anyone had used Year One's SVM28 and get some opinions regarding how that particular shade of "Pearl" matched other components of the same color for the same year model. I have been able to find no other vendor that has a vinyl dye in "Pearl" to date. I know that SEM has a color match service, so I thought that someone might have undertaken that task to match "Pearl" interiors and made the formula available for Year One to sell under their label. Perhaps I should have clarified early on that I am not attempting to match original, 47 year-old interior parts. Directly below is a link to the Year One product.

That being said, there is a person local to me who specializes in interior restorations. I am sure he could take my samples and match colors for me pretty easily; however, I'm also sure it would be a pretty expensive endeavor. I would like to try to do the work myself and get the refinished parts reasonably close in color to my new pieces. The car won't be a trailer queen, but a rather nice example that was mostly done in my shop.

Here's an SEM Color Coat sample chart.

You could have a custom mix made, but it will be tricky, just as most of the 1970 interior colors are. You have to play with shade, metallic level, and gloss level. I usually go through 2 or 3 trial mixes, before I get a match, and they aren't exactly cheap, but once you get it,you're good.
I've own a few 1970-1971 cars with the pearl or ivory interior(whatever you want to call it),and I have used the SEM Super White. It matches very well.
You also have to realize that even the original interior from the factory didn't match each and every other piece exactly. You had some parts that were plastic, some were vinyl, and some metal.

I have seen the above paints used on a concours gold 1970 GS, and it looked to be a perfect match. I know the restorer worked very hard to get just the right color.

I try not to dye anything that will actually get wear, like seat covers. Headrests are fine, but seats get a lot of movement, friction, etc.,and you really are not dying them. It is pretty much still paint, and it can wear off. Seen it more than once, and a few of them I know were prepped exactly as the should.

Here is the results of this exact process. I did the headrests, seat backs, seat aprons, console lid, and arm rest bases.

Excellent information, Chris! So, the Ames product is used in conjunction with the SEM Super White to achieve the Pearl look? Ironically, I just ordered a couple of cans of the VDM28 today in hopes that it would be something I could use. I can pick up the SEM 15103 here locally. If those 2 products achieve the look above, that will be great!

James, thanks for those great photos.
