Specifically a set of TA stage 2 aluminum.

Doing a basic clean up on a set of stock heads. is this something that anyone can do who does head porting professionally ? or does it need to be a "Buick specialist" ? can my local machinist do the porting?

Any knowledgeable head porter can do the work, machinist generally don't fool with porting

I would see what is it's going to cost to have it done locally, there are cnc programs out there that for 1200ish bucks that really makes the heads shine.

Stage 2 heads flow enough out of the box to make a easy 600 hp , your need is for more?

Last time I checked, you can get the entry level porting for 300.00 or so. If you haven't bought the heads yet, inquire with whoever you buy the heads from, TA, or Jim Weise.

I already have the heads, I was planning on just running them as is, but from what I have read the most bang for the buck in cost to HP improvement I can do is to get entry level porting done. If I can get it done locally and save on shipping that will be great.

Ta heads need a little blending behind the valve,..its easy enough to do your self really

As much as id like to do my own work, I hear too many stories of not knowing what your doing and screwing it up, Unless it really is obvious what needs to be done.

Basic blending is pretty easy, you just remove the sharp edges and make the transitions smooth. Biggest thing is to be careful around the valve seat, to not nick it with the grinder, so basically just don't be clumsy. You can clean up and smooth the machining in the port entries and blend the transition from the valve seat into the bowls pretty easy. Smoothing the sharp edge from the valve job on the short side will help a bit. Again, you dont have to remove material but just remove sharp edges.

The biggest benefits with porting is laying the short side back a bit, and widening the bowls.
