I saw a 69 skylark 2 door hardtop sitting in a yard and stopped to inquire about it. i was told it was a parts car for a car in the barn. the car in the barn is 90% covered up with junk but the left fender has a stage 1 emblem on it it and it is a convertible. i plan to go back to talk to the owner but do not know what to offer nor do i have any idea what a 69 convertible stage 1, (assuming it is a stage 1) is worth. it is a northern car and the floors are rotted and i am assuming it will need a complete restoration. anyone who can help me with pricing and any clues on how to ascertain if it is a real stage 1 would be appreciated.
I am not a 69 expert but I remember the emblems being on the hood. Take a look at this link. http://www.rockymountainclassiccars.com/1969 Buick GS.htm Beginning in 1970 for skylarks they were moved to the fenders. I think one year a Riv had the emblem in its front grille.
That's right Jim. Stage 1 emblems on 69's should be on the hood. Plus, the design of them is slightly different than that of a 70 and up. Look for a 44637 as the first 5 digits of the VIN. That tells you GS400. As far as stage one, there are specific carb and distributor codes. Plus air cleaner decals. Chances of any of those still being with the car are slim. But, you can check the code on the ID plate of the trans, if it says BB, that's a good start, as BB code trans's came with stage ones. Plus, an F in the VIN would be another step closer. You should see if it has a POP in the glove box.
yep, Jim the guru is right :TU: no emblems on the fender for 69. stage 1 or 350 or 400 emblems on the sides of the hood scoop and GS emblem on the rear quarter by the marker light.if theres emblems on the front fenders, they are not original
thanks for the info fellas. i had a feeling the "find" may be too good to be true but it still may be an interesting car.
Plus there should be GS "swing away" trunk/lock cover emblem. (if it hasn't falle off that is). Even if it has fallen off, the two holes will still be there. (if it is the original decklid).
Look on the deck of the block between the two rear spark plugs on the driver's side and the exhaust manifold.
Since no one else has mentioned it, if the Stage 1 emblem is on the fender, it's a '70-'72 Stage 1 convertible. You REALLY need to check on this one.
I assumed from his post he was saying that the convert is also a 69. Otherwise it would look nothing like the hardtop he identified outside the barn as a 69. But if he has the year model incorrect you are correct and the verification instructions we gave need to be changed depending on the correct year.
the car is for sure a 69. i own a 72 stage 1 hardtop which is why i joined the v8 buick board originally. but i cannot remember ever seeing a 69 stage 1 on the street nor have i worked on a 400. i found out from jr that it is a smaller size 455 i do appreciate the good help and am going to check it out when i can and take pictures.
that is a beautiful car and now i know what to look for on the block. i really like the blue paint with the white top. thank you for the pictures. now i just have to get back out there and look at the car again.
? David have you gotten back out there to look at that car yet? I just thought I would ask it has been a few days. I hope it turns out to be a Stage 1. Good luck! Brian
no i have not but thank you for asking. it is a long ways from houston. i did ask a friend of mine to cruise by there and he said the parts car is now mostly covered with a tarp. it will probably be thanksgiving or christmas before i get back that way as it is most of a day's drive to get there.
