Anyone know anything about either of these two carbs? Would the 350, 800CFM quadrajet be enough for my 74 455?

455-430-400-350 High Performance Quadrajet Carburetor 800 CFM for big blocks and 750 CFM for 350. Completely rebuilt and blueprinted for maximum performance. Will outperform other high performance carburetors, along with better gas mileage and greater reliability. Each carb is test run on a GS before shipping. Your engine looks stock and you can still retain the factory air cleaner. One year or 12,000 mile warranty. No Core Charge.

The 350 carb has different idle circuits and your 455 will idle poorly. Spend the extra $$$ and get the correct carb. You may be able to save a bit finding a good 800 455 core on ebay or this board and rebuilding it yourself. Also, I do not think Buick ever used an 800 350 carb......

There is no such thing as an 800 CFM Buick 350 carb. Only BB carbs were 800 from 71-74. Get a good 800 core and send it to John Osborne, he'll rebuild it and jet it to your combination, and it will probably cost less.

POSTON CARBS ARE REBUILT BY A GUY CALLED NORM DELIE, OUT OF MICHIGAN I BOUGHT ONE IDLED GREAT BUT HAD A STUMBEL ON ACCELERATION FOUGHT IT FOR A COUPLE WEEKS FOUND THAT THE ROD TO THE ACCERATOR PUMP WAS TO SHORT,AFTER AT WAS FIXED NO PROBLEMS,SO I DOUBT IF THESE ARE TESTED ON A GS,SINCE THIS PROBLEM WOULD HAVE BEEN PICK UP RIGHT AWAY ALSO THEY CHARGE A CORE CHARGE THAT IS NOT REFUNDABLE IF YOU DONT RETURN A LIKE CARB.

    Hmmmm

Norm is a straight up guy and knows his Buicks. He's been racing a GS for years. If he is doing the work it should be good. Of course, anybody can screw up..... Maybe they tested it on a GS 350.....lol.

    Yeah Larry - I didn't think a 350 ever got an 800, I suspect its a typo???

I have that very same 800cfm Q-Jet from Poston on my '70 Skylark,it's been on there for almost 13 years,I've never had a problem with it,but,it is on a 350.
When I first installed it, had a wide open throttle miss,a 1" carb spacer solved that problem. I think back then I paid $229.00?:TU:

I have a carb from a 74 455 Electra wagon that came with the same engine. Its just been sitting a while and probably needs an overhaul. I really rather have a new carb, anyone know if the Edlebrock 800 carb is anygood?

Dennis, if you're set on the Edelbrock, would you be interested in shooting over the 74 qjet?

Not sure if I am using the Edelbrock yet. I may just have my Q-jet rebuilt. Price is going to be about the same either way.

Is that edelbrock a front feed or side feed. Where the fuel line connects? I thought they only made the side feed (Chevy).

The edelbrock performers are side feeders. Not sure about Qjet version.

However, feed postion isn't important unless you want stock look, and then why would you be using a performer anyhow?

Well, lets see. The idea I get from this site is to out do the other manufactures. I am one to believe that my Buick can "look" stock and kick ass on High dollar HP other make vehicles. If I bolt one of "their" carbs on my motor all is lost. It is not to hard to get a 800 CFM Qjet and have the fuel line look stock. .

Don't know what you are all angry about. I was talking about the Performer AVS carbs and you can spot one of those a mile away. Hence your fuel line would be the last thing to worry about at that point.

I am putting a buick 455 into a 91 Camaro and I am gonna catch all kinds of hell for it, but I could careless. The point isn't to be the baddest, its to enjoy your car.

    I guess I am uneducated.

I thought we were talking Qjets. I was just trying to say why not get a Buick 800 cfm Qjet rebuilt instead of paying for a "new" edelbrock that is side feed.
What tranny/rear end will you run in the F-body?
Sounds like it will be bad ass and fun.

It did start off as a Quadrajet conversation, but the Edelbrocks I was speaking of were the AFB versions. Sorry for the confusion. Tranny is going to be a TH350, if it blows I will buy a performance one from probuilt automatics. I am planning on running a 2400 stall. Rear is stock for the moment, but when I have the money it will be a Ford 9" unit.

Those Edelbrock Performer 850 Q-jet carbs are mighty impressive out of the box, just had an untouched one on a motor, made 500 HP, everything a 950 HP did on that motor.

Nice thing is they have an electric choke.

Not a bad option, but yes, the fuel line comes in like the '67 Buick Q-jet did..

    Dumb question:

Where or how does the Edelbrock Performer 850 Q-jet get the extra 50 CFM over the Buick 800 CFM?

i bought that qjet from postons ran perfect until 500 miles then the little brass tube that feeds the fuel down the seccondarys came off and went threw my moter, no damage but when it happen i had no clue what happen it rattled around a little on the valve, thought i had a rod knocken, then it when threw and smashed the electrod closed on #8, didnt have a clue then why the knock went away and now i had a miss, basicaly i spent a month trying to narrow it down, then i noticed the piece missing, and it all made sence, all in all i was *&&*%(&%$#@ off!!!!! i put a different airhore on and it still is running great.

There are two sizes for the Qjet; one is the 750, used on all engines 350, and smaller. The 830, is for the engines sized above 350. Some of the 350 engines used the 830, however, these were rare. Likely, the 455 will suffer tremendously with the 750, not just on WOT, but the idle circuits will likely cause surging, hesitations and stalling. The correct size for the 455 is an 850. Suggestion... do it right the first time, and save the do over time for something else. Ray
