    Hi, greetings from overseas.
I'm currently working on my customers 66 riviera. we fitted that engine with edelbrock 1411 and i cant get it runing quite well
first thing is that new alternator regulator keeps buzzing on when engine is above 1000 rpm. regulator is new, the old one couldnt wake itself.
second thing is that spark plugs keep on clogging up, carb is currently almost completely full lean on both sides and it keeps on getting messy.
i can provide some photos as well as description, but i really need help, in my area there are not many shops that work on American cars, and i have nobody to ask for help.
when i connected external rpm display it was very messy it kept jumping +/- 400 rpm all the time.
i did few rounds, maby 10 miles and it was running worse and worse.
also, what is that relay i have in my hand on picture? it is on the drivers side of firewall.
also it sounds like its missfiring at random points and even backfires on idle
    thanks for help! 121639288_3492544824140472_6309386996471001311_n.jpg 121661162_390908628587943_2572840591039796036_n.jpg 121628843_677270346251441_4672665689332179595_n.jpg 121717422_809947629755949_9130315077601490011_n.jpg 121801549_260659471998090_7119783249274755470_n.jpg

The carburetor requires a metal gasket underneath the paper gasket to seal the exhaust trough on the intake. The trough is connected to the heat crossover in the intake.

I have the edelbrock 1407, which also is a 750cfm but with manual choke.. my 401" runs good, no adjustments made to the carb.. I'm no expert, but I think it sounds like electrical issues.. How is the spark? How much timing are you running? When have the sparkplugs last been changed? Sparkplug wires?

New gapped spark plugs, new wires, new coil. Spark is rather small. That was my first idea

so that is a "spreadbore" ( quadrajet style ) '66 intake ? if not shouldn't need that adapter .
yeah may need the gasket-plate-gasket kit under there . under normal circumstances that should be an ok carb for your motor .
and the metal around those points sure looks kinda beat up . something loose in there or not matching up ? distributor shaft play ?

    Yes I'm from poland.
It may look bad but it's a new rivet. It's a new element but it was very loose.
Pic of alternator tomorrow, or if I find any on PC.
Took pic of manifold under metal gasket. And it looks bad. Was sanded and powder coated 20201015_183132.jpg 20201015_183135.jpg

That is a spreadbore intake, for a qudrajet carb..

Has the car run with that carburator?
Does it have an adapter, for running a squarebore carb on a spreadbore intake? Is the gas okay?
    Have you checked the timing?

I have adapter plate. Gas is super fresh. I barely dam check timing when idling cuz it varieties rpm, but when distributor is disconnected it's around 3-4 but rpms are higher than normal idle received_2864100047042969.jpeg

Have you tried to turn the distribuator cap while engine is on, to see if it helps? How about a bad vacum leak? How many volts do you have at the distribuator?

With the idle moving around like that, I would suspect either an intermittent miss or perhaps some issue with the distributor bushings.

I have a spread bore intake and I heard many cautionary tales about using a square bore carb with an adapter. The consensus seems to be that it won't run right. Is there a reason you didn't use a Quadrajet?

Also, you can plug those crossovers in the intake manifold. Then you won't need the metal plate.

I can tell you right now that using the square bore carb with a spread bore intake is just not good. I tried to do this on a Buick 350 I used a Carter AFB carb and the spacer with the spread bore secondary intake just did not run good at all part throttle was crappy and used gas.

No Matter what I did to the jets and rods I could not get it right. On the floor yeah it was good but driving around just did not work.

Use a square bore intake that matches the carb or get a spread bore carb like a Quadrajet that matches the intake.

Ok so i took intake manifold to shop to get it "flat" because i could see that there is a leak between small intake holes and exhaust warmers. i plan to pug them, what is best solution to do so?

If your customer is set on using the Edelbrock, sell the spread bore intake for $$$ and buy a square bore intake for $. Then search my posts for setting up a 750 cfm Edelbrock with electric choke. My car runs great and gets decent MPG.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

Also, You need to be sure the electrical system is providing correct voltage and current to the ignition system. If it isn't (discharging at idle), that could also cause the plugs to foul and make it run like crap.

Lots of possible reason for a car to run badly. you need to eliminate them all.

I know of somebody with an NOS (new old stock) 66 quadrajet carburetor for sale who would probably be willing to ship it.

Well, i am in Poland. I worked on 4 customer Rivs so far. I own 66 aswell. I rebuild q-jets aswell. To be honest i have like 14 rivs iny phone book atm. My friend near Lublin is working on, and i just quote him, 11th riviera in his career. And he rebuild them from ground up. Frankly i think i have heard of more Rivs in Poland than i saw on this board being restored.
