72 pet chicken i dont wanna be a pirate!

dicided to strip my lark down to the metal, so i could take a shot at smoothing out some waves in the quarters, and get ready for paint this spring. went at it full bore this morning. its a pain in the butt to say the least, but not bad considering i had no help.

after a few chemical burns, i dicided to ditch my sandals for sneakers and rubber gloves.

    here is my progress.

    Pete,

Looks good. I'm in the midst of that on my '71. I pulled the bumpers and rear glass today. I'm going in deep. Good luch to you. I hoped to get mine painted before it gets too hot here in AZ...but it'll be 90's all next week...about 18 degrees above normal. I hope it cools back down! Keep posting pics.

i couldnt imagine doing this in 90 degree weather. i live a few miles from the beach, so i get that nice ocean breeze channeled between the canyon walls.

gonna give it another shot tomorrow. maybe buy an extra pair of gloves and a scraper for my wife :TU:

how is the progress on yours? mine is twice the work since theres two coats.

    Pete,
What brand stripper are you using?

And from someone who found out the hard way, try to keep the chemicals away from pinch and weld seams. No matter how often you flush those areas to neutralize the stuff, it always seems to rear its ugly head again after a topcoat.

Good thread!!! Looks like it`s coming along :TU: In regards to Devon`s post. What about putting masking tape along the outer edges of the panels and stripping to the tape?? Is it easier to remove the hood, fenders, etc and strip on a sawhorse for example?? I was planning on doing this in a few years to my GS when I get can get a bit more ..hm..$$$$ socked away!!
    Later,Tony.

Been there :puzzled: It's messy for sure, but after jerkin' around for a "few years" with other projects, I just got the paint on the quarters and roof yesterday, so now, it all seems worth it :TU:

Stuff I used was called something like Aircraft Paint Remover. You can get it at most auto supply stores or auto paint stores.

    cstanley-gs Silver Mist

I can recommend a product called Kutzit
Get it at Ace home hardware.

Its a very mild chemical but works wonders... no harmfull smell either....

....I used it on wood furniture too with even better results...

    Wish i could help.
Its a pain doing it on your own, big car too.

I was thinking about this question too, since my body shop class teacher mentioned this. Anyone who's had bad/good results from not taping the edges?

My Skylark convertable is completely stripped and I am puting it on a body cart this weekend. I got a quote from a place to sandblast and prime the body for $1,400. I'm reading your thread and thinking what else could I do with that money and... How many hour is it likely to take to strip the car myself.

not too much. iv been going down to the garage for about 45 minutes at a time. can strip a panel in about that time by myself. since i live in an apartment, i havnt gone too crazy with all the scraping and sanding since theres an apartment above my garage. makes too much noise. otherwise, i would have had it done in a weekend or so :spank:

its a pain in the butt sometimes, but its well worth saving the money. iv maybe spent 50-75 bucks on supplies.
