I have a 72 Skylark Custom Convertible 350 2 barrel with 3 on the tree manual transmission. Since I acquired it I upgraded it with a TA Perfromance intake, Holley 650 4 barrels and Muncie M20 4 speed. I have seen some 4 speed conversion threads that say you need these braces if going from automatic to manual transmissions. I am.thinking of adding headers, bigger exhaust etc. So I have a few questions if anyone can help since I don't know what I am looking for: 1) since the car was factory 3 speed manual, do you think I have these braces already? 2) Does anyone have a picture of these braces installed so I know what to look for? 3) if I don't have them, does anyone know where the best place to get them would be? Thanks much everyone!
Do you mean the f41 rear end frame braces? If you can get a set of OEM braces in good shape, and little to no deep pitting rust, that is the best option. UMI and other's make tube braces, and a few make the stamped steel, but those are thinner and "iffy" material. Here is the braces on ebay, and an image of where they install. The diagonal braces. (top image are OEM, and the bottom are tube type) (I have no affiliation, other than being a UMI customer.) http://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-Original...ash=item33c9ce3c9d:g:VNEAAOSw3v5Ynn1H&vxp=mtr (yeah, it's a beamer, but shows the tubes... p)
Ames Pontiac sells good reproductions that are the correct metal thickness (guage) and reasonably priced. You may score a used set for less.
you will also need to buy the longer bolts to accommodate the braces, board member ToddsGS sells them.
FYI - A 3 on the tree 3 speed car doesn't have these braces. I bought a set from Ames and look fairly solid. Thanks guys.
Those were mainly installed on the big block A-body cars, not really needed for a three on a tree car. The trans would blow up before the frame broke. But if in you're planning on upgrading the drive train, then those are a smart addition. Derek
