Is there such a thing? Or does the bodyman just have to custom cut/fit pieces in? I pulled the vinyl top off of mine the other day in preperation for paint, and looks like the two lower rear corners are definitely going to need to be cut out. I know it varies a lot but anyone have an idea on how much something like this costs to replace? I'm thinking it will be the most costly of everything, the car needs little to no bodywork otherwise.
No I don't have any pics yet, I need to clean all the old glue off, and pull the back window to see how bad it really is. Will try to do this weekend. I had the back window out about 4 years ago, it wasn't rusted that bad, (about 3-4 inches on each corner, only in the channel itself. It looks like now, it has spread to outside the channel, perhaps not all the way through, but there are some pretty big rust bubbles there. I am thinking of having it repaired and not putting the vinyl top back on, as that has seemed to make things alot worse. Should have fixed it right the first time. (4 years ago) I will definitely take some pics, and post them up.
I was wondering what this is....may have been previous repair, it is identical on both sides. Maybe the factory didn't finish the vinyl top cars as well as the ones without? Doesn't look like the vinyl top glue or anything, and the grooves are pretty deep.
Got a little crazy with the pic posting, I need to pull that back window out to see how bad that really is. The rust bubbles look like they may have pitted the metal pretty bad, will have to sand them and see what they look like.
looks ok except the core support compaired to some I have seen. The Roof Repair is a factor seam where the quarter and roof join. I took my rear window out of my car to address the rear window channel. We took 3m clean and strip wheels and cleaned the channel. We did a little spot blasting to clean up a few pin holes and welded then up. I would expect to see the same with yours also.
Thanks Phil, the rust got alot of that inner fender, might have to find a replacement for that. Have Mike G.'s core support repair kit, will have that welded in soon. Like I was saying , I guess I will have to pull that rear window, and see how bad that really is.
Rear window patch panel Just an idea... more knowledgeable people may talk you out of it. But, here is a thought. 70-72 Chevelle roof line is very similar to our Skylark/GS, trunk lids are the same GM part. Here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4501111762&category=42611 is a link to a Chevelle patch panel for this area. If it won't work it probably isn't a bad piece to start with and your time will add up to that purchase price pretty quick. Being so similar, aftermarket Chevelle parts are often worth a look on the generic stuff.
The "tulip" panel (the panel between the rear window and deck lid) is different between a 68-72 Buick A body and a 68-72 Chevy A body (or other GM A body for that matter). The rear windows will not interchange, either. You'll need to either repair what you have or source a good panel/window channel from a parts car, as the Chevy part cannot be used in whole. You may be able to use pieces/parts of it, but the channel is completely different on a Buick.
Won't work! I should stick to what I know... if only I knew what that is??? I appreciate the correction guys.
It all depends on how perfect you want the repair, if you plan on keeping the vynle( spelling ) top it should not be to much finishing work because most of the repair will be hidden, but if you want it perfect it could cost some money, you could possibly go to a air-conditioning/sheet metal fabricating place and see if they can make a patch for it, just a thought. You might also want to pull the rear seat bottom out and see if there is rust there as this is most likely the area where the water pools and sets.
Steve if you have to remove any of the rear window stainless mounting studs let me know. I have the screw in types to replace them I'll give you a few. :beer
