It is above the gasket now and makes a slight bulge in the top gasket. The plastic baffle tends to keep it in place too.

Going to tune it after I get some other things done and see how it acts.

It takes a team effort to keep these old cars going!

Seems to work pretty good. May need to set the float a bit higher since I went conservative due to the warped air horn and known issues with leaking.

I've also installed a vac advance. I'm a bit confused on where to put it though. I have 4 ports on the front of my quadrajet main body.

The 1 of 4 is a bit of a mystery to me. The odd one is a large one on the driver side that shows 7" of vac at idle and not full vac until you crack the throttle

It seems to be and semi-ported. What should it be used for? It is capped now.

Currently, I have my small ported vacuum port running into a Y that runs the Turbo 200-4R overdrive lockup control and the ignition vac advance.

The big full vacuum port is capped.

Well, I thought I was almost home. The thing was running pretty good, pulls to 5,000 in 1, 2 and no bog at 3500. I was still leaking just a bit on the filter housing and I loosened the 5/8" line to snug it just a tad more and it popped out!

Dang it all! Went ahead and took it out and it looks like the threads are about shot. There are slivers of aluminum coming out of it.

Is it acceptable to use an oversized filter housing to repair it or am I just asking for more heartache?

It was always like the fun fat girl, pretty ugly but under the covers it didn't matter!

I have rebuilt it about 6 times in the 32 years I've owned it. Maybe it is time to finally get one of the guys here to build me a good one or bite the bullet and go EFI.

    It's always something it seems.
Best permanent fix is to heli coil the inlet.
You can find filter housings with deeper threads and they can catch more threads. They do also sell oversize that will cut in to main body threads. But Heli Coil is what I would recommend.

I have a 7028244 Q-jet body. If I could move my jets, rods, etc and bolt my base and top to it, would that work? I'll get a number this evening.

Otherwise, can you helicoil it or is it something you'd have a good replacement for? I could use just the center main body or a whole carb minus the base since I have to have mine with the TV cable stud.

You would need a 71-74 main body and you could swap them out. I do have plenty of parts and main bodies if you need one.

Do you have a fuel pressure regulator on there? Q jets will not be happy with too much fuel pressure.

Factory Stage 1 fuel pump with return line connected and a pusher electric pump. The electric is supposed to be set at 6psi. It fills the bowl then starts cycling when it hits the float level.

Please email me some options on your main bodies. A non-warped air horn (the top) would not be a bad idea either. They don't have to be show quality but maybe I'd like to have one that looks nicer than my ugly one that is oxidized aluminum.

I would verify the fuel pressure with a gauge, too much pressure could be your issue.

Cliff says the later Q-jet carburetors have no problem with pressure up to 10 psi. My CV pump makes 8-9 psi, I see 10 occasionally. No problem at all with my 72 Q-jet or the AED 1000 DP.

    Mark (CarManTX),

Got the carb today. Looks great!

I'll probably put the base plate on this weekend and if the weather is good, take it for a spin.
