I was doing a compression test on my "race" 65 Wildcat, when I noticed the crank speed was going down dramatically, so I added a battery and turned up the booster to no avail. I then put my AVR meter on it and found the starter was drawing 300amps with no spark plugs in the engine. Took the starter down to the local auto electric shop to get fixed.
I was wondering if I should put that money towards a reduction mini starter instead. How good are they, and what do they go for. One problem I have, is I need the starter for test and tune at my track on this coming Saturday, so I probably don't have a choice.

I have a Tom Telesco mini-starter in my 431cu-inch Nailhead. The stock starter would have easily fit, but the Mini is much lighter. I hate unnecessary weight. It works great. 300 amps without spark plugs is nuts!

How much do those mini starters weigh? I noticed that the stock starter was steel and cast from front to back, noticeably heavier than a aluminum nosed starter.

I'm going to have to put the old one back on for the time being, but one of Tom's starters is definitely going on there. It would be worth it for the weight savings alone, the extra torque being a bonus.
