Looking to get my 71 Skylark Custom repainted. Vinyl top has some bubbles but no rust thru that I can tell. I need to remove all the trim around the windows and top prior to painting as well as the top itself. Any ideas as to how not to destroy the trim and remove it properly would be deeply appreciated!!

Use the windshield removal tool....lay a washcloth on the glass so you don't scratch the glass. Once you "pop" the clips..the stainless will come off the car. As for the side stainless....place a washcloth over the stainless and use a can opener......and it will pop off....start at the A-pillar and work your way to the rear.....once you get the first 12-15" started...you can usually use your fingers to remove the rest of the way.

I was told that both the front and rear windshields need to be removed for the vinyl top and headliner replacement. Any ideas???

No necessary for the vinyl top or the headliner.

For the headliner......much easier to install it with the glass removed.

the clips holding the windshield & read window stainless do not need to be popped. knowing that the clips can be moved side to side, (i forget whether u have to slide them left or right to remove) i found a multi-function tool at princess auto that would work. i slid the tool under the trim and onto the clip and pulled the clip in the removal direction. worked like a charm and no damage to the trim.
again, it is not necessary to remove the glass to remove the vinyl roof. i have done it.
