Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, I have a 65 Riviera with a 401. Last fall as I was putting it away for winter the a/c compressor started making noise. It looks like I'll probably have to buy a compressor, my preference would be for an aftermarket one, since they look to be smaller and less expensive than a remanufactured one. If any one has any suggestions or has been down this road I'd like to hear it. Thanks!

I would recommend the Pro6Ten direct replacement for your A6 compressor, hands down. It is a Sanden based compressor with all direct mounting for the A6 brackets and belt. I've used a few of these with great results
There is also one called the S6 which is Nippondenso based. I'm hearing VERY good things about them, but haven't field tested one to make a judgement.
They are both similar displacement so the performance will be about equal. They are both somewhat LESS displacement than the original A6. That means that total system output in BTU will be less than original. However, those old GM/Frigidaire systems had a good bit of excess capacity. You won't notice the reduced capacity unless you live in the desert.
Both will run in the $3-400 range. A good Google search will reveal the best deal.

Good, quality reman A6 compressors are scarce, if not unavailable, today. The new, offshore A6's have become a crapshoot for quality in recent years.

    Hope this helps, Tom
