Stage 1 Fuel pump---- Top is Buick Red and the cup is gold cad?

Z bar and the small arm to the clutch fork---- Black? (I saw Kleiner had done his repro in a gold)

Alternator Bracket ----Natural (equivalent to cast iron paint?)

    Bell Housing---- Natural or aluminum?

    Jim,
Never saw a fuel pump painted. I don't think Buick did either.

Which alternator bracket???? If it is aluminum, then it is natural. If it is the welded steel piece, then it is black.

As for bellhousing, I would clean it and then clear it. Otherwise they have a tendency to oxidize creating aluminum oxide and it creates a white/chalky residue.

For the aluminum alternator bracket and ps brackets, I clear them to prevent oxidation.

I am sure JW can give you more info.

George I am almost sure we have posted on the top steel bracket and there was agreement it came upainted just like the driveshafts. I agree that most you see are painted black.

What do you say about the motor mounts --black and not cast iron like the pads?

    Jim-

For what it's worth, I just went out to the garage and shot some brake clean on my original motor mounts. Looks like remnants of black paint to me, but I'm only about 90% sure.

That is my impression also Ken. What do you say about tha alt adjustment ( the top) bracket color? Did I misremember what the agreement was on that?

Looks unpainted here next to my ac compressor bracket, which is clearly painted black.

Yes that is what I recall. It is great having your original car. I see the bolt heads are silver and not black like so many you see. Very helpful.

I have made some progress and will be ready for the engine and tranny in 2 weeks if the creek does not rise.

You are correct Jim, the alt adj bar is unfinished.
I was thinking of the one that bolts to the head.
Lower alt bracket. Did not know if you had an ac car
or not. I "think" all non-ac cars had a lower alt bracket
    that is aluminum.

I just tore down, two 1970 455 engines. Both were all original engines, one was in a 70 Electra and the other is a GS455 I just disassembled about a month ago. They were both black.

That bracket is mag phosphate I believe. Same as the hood hinges, and the coil brackets.

Although I have also seen some galvanized coil brackets.

Anything that was bare steel would be a ball of rust after 5 years, let alone 35.

Like George, I have seen a number of black ones.

Thanks Dr Weise . What is your thinking as to why Ken's alt. bracket looks so light and the phosphate coating on hinges looks so much darker? Does the darker coating go away with time?

The coil bracket is the original style but looks as if it was once chrome or certainly a light color . Perhaps the same? Ken Do you have any pics of your coil bracket?

    Jim,
JW is right, most of the coil brackets are gray phosphate, although I have also seen a few zinc plated ones.

I don't know which is correct, but I do know that on some of his earlier restorations Kleiner got carried away with gold cad plating...

Here's a pic of the coil bracket. It's currently at Dr Jim's, so I can't have a fresh looksie at it. I'm thinking mine may have been zinc coated, but I'm not sure. It and the alternator bracket look lighter than the hood hinges.

    Ken,
Good pics! Does your water temp sender or water neck have a leak?
Just wondering where the green water is coming from.

That is more like how my brackets appear. I would describe them as a combo of blue/gray and silver.

    George-

That pic was shot the day we pulled the motor, so hoses were already disconnected at that time. :TU:

I need confirmation on the extent of the Buick red paint, if any, on the 455 distrib. and the stage one fuel pump. Ken you changed your dist. but was your fuel pump still original?
