Dave, did you ever get to the bottom of this? I need the same clips for a 70 vinyl top GS. The ones I removed from my car were all over the map, its a wonder the moldings ever stayed on.

my 72 gs, with vinyl roof, had all clips with the horizontal slots. i have since purchased 40 new of these from restoration specialties. the clips with the vertical slot were the replacement (upgrade) for the horizontal slotted clips. the problem with the vertical slotted clips is that they cannot be removed unless the moulding is released from the clip. it would be too easy to damage the moulding. in my opinion the old clips are much more user friendly because u can slide the sideways and remove the clips & mouldinds at the same time, with no damage to the moulding.

Based on my yarding experience.....long red clips go on the back and the short squares go on the front.....I believe this practice went to 1977...then changed for the 78 model year.

Still with the BAll of Confusion. Try Georges descriptions. I have three different types from GM. I will try tham all eventually and just see what works best. When they are in who cares I guess.

One place you might want to try is a local autobody paint supply store. That is what I did and they (sometimes) have knowledgeable people and the parts books. I came to the conclusion though, that I hate the window moldings due to the fact they never seem to fit right and was thinking of just masking around my windows and running a bead of seal around and smooth it out to emulate it being a gasket.

Probably a bit late Dave but scroll down on my last page for some info on these clips, plus a little warning could save you some real grief....about picture 10....these same clips (8717859) are sold at NAPA for cheap and are identical, even same stamping markings.

The reality here is that there are about half a dozen different aftermarket clips that will work.

As to what came from the factory, I can tell you that I agree with George, the smaller clip like the one shown on the far right of your picture in the first post are the windshield reveal molding clips, and the longer one just to the left of that, with the angular pin slot, are the rear window reveal molding clips.

With or without vinyl top has no affect on this.

    That's what I figured.

That's what I didn't know. Maybe that's the reason my rear moldings don't reach the clip? I might have the wrong ones on there.
